Traditional shepherds hut on a small farm situated on fringes of Exmoor National Park that uses draught horses to work the land. The hut is in a meadow, close to the Crooked Oak River, on the edge of the hamlet of Ash Mill. It’s clean, cosy, pretty, & very authentic accommodation. Nestled in a sheltered position, the hut has a small double bed, compost toilet, no shower (but a tin bath!), an outdoor camp kitchen under a canvas awning, camp fire, picnic table, drinking water & mains electric.

The space
We try to ensure you will be comfortable in this cosy rustic stay. You have the entire meadow for your exclusive use during your stay, we host no other guests, so privacy is assured.
-Warm comfortable bedding inside the hut, with a relaxing ambience.
-a pipsqueak wood stove, or an electric radiator, if you get cold.
-outdoor kitchen consisting of cold drinking water, Belfast sink and slate work surface under a canvas awning right next to the shepherd’s hut.
-permanently set up campfire which you can cook on.
-kettle and one ring baby belling hot plate inside hut.
-your own parking space close to the hut.
-cooking condiments, utensils and plates, pots, & pans.

You are welcome to wander around our farmland and to watch our draught horses when they are in action (we use no tractors here). We have four horses, ducks that roam around doing their own thing, two dogs, three cats, a flock of sheep, and we welcome all insects, bees, butterflies, foxes, badgers, rabbits and wildflowers. Nature is our thing.

The Google Street View has not been updated for many years and represents what the place looked like before we moved in and conducted major renovations. It's a lot prettier now than it was!

The compost toilet is set up in a separate hut close to the river a little away from the Shepherds hut. It is clean and functional, with no odour, and works well.

Where you’ll be

Ash Mill, United Kingdom

Ash Mill. A quaint, but unremarkable farming community. The nearest town is South Molton (5.6miles). It's a proper Exmoor town with a market on Thursday and Saturday well worth attending. The wonders of Exmoor National Park are less than 5 miles up the road. It's a largely undiscovered wonder of the English landscape, and we love it's quiet open majesty. If you love walking, this is an unspoilt walkers paradise. We can give you recommendations for walks, restaurants and great pubs in the local area.

Horse drawn farmer with a love of nature and the countryside. We live a plain and simple life in our 11.5 acres of glorious Devon countryside. Horses provide the motive power on our farm, you will find no tractors here and we try to do things in as a traditional and natural way as possible. I believe that the adoption of “progress” should be a conscious and discerning choice, not an unthinking inevitability - innovation and technology should be our servants, not our masters. If something done the old way feels better and is more enjoyable than something new, why change? By choosing us you help keep traditional countryside skills and horse farming practices alive, whilst promoting nature and the natural beauty of the English Countryside.

During your stay
We very much hope you will have a wonderful, calm and comfortable stay with us. We are happy to show you around the farm if you would like and if you want to watch the horses work and take photographs you are welcome to do so. I'm around the place pretty much all the time, working our farm, doing maintenance jobs, and tending to the livestock. I am happy to answer any questions or to chat, but will give you space if that is what you want.
