Great place to get away from it all! Panoramic views, steady cool breezes, wireless internet, electricity 24/7, great cell phone reception, pure drinking water, and no mosquitoes or coqui frogs make this place exceptional for Lower Puna. Quiet and scenic room in vegetarian sanctuary near ocean for health-conscious nature-lovers. Easy bike ride to where molten lava pours into the ocean yet well off the beaten path where other rentals are located. Please read detailed description thoroughly.
Aloha! This listing is for the larger of two rooms available in my home, which I call the "Lava Sanctuary". The rate on this page is for shared bathroom and shared vegetarian kitchen, although there is a very good chance that you will have both to yourself. There is a separate listing for renting both rooms together with kitchen and bathroom as a private apartment, titled "Scenic Lava Sanctuary".
The Lava Sanctuary is in an extraordinary setting, resting on a 25-year-old lava flow, away from other homes, and is completely off the grid. The views of the ocean, nearby jungle, and lava activity are stunning. It is especially remarkable for Puna that there are no coqui frogs or mosquitoes here, nor ants to speak of. It's just a 10-minute walk to spectacular cliffs high above breaking waves, across one of the very few remaining strips of lush, pristine and undeveloped coastline in Puna. Only 40 minutes from Hilo, it is in the driest part of Puna, the southeast part of the Big Island. Without trees to block the steady ocean breezes, the house stays cooler and more comfortable than homes in the jungle on warm sunny days. Unlike some of the other accommodations on the lava, there is a modern bathroom with flush toilet inside the home, and there are real windows that can be closed when it gets really windy, as it sometimes does.
There is AC power 24 hours / day from 1400 watts of solar panels. Unlimited high-speed internet included. The property has great cell phone reception with both Verizon and AT&T, unlike much of lower Puna where there is no cell phone reception. Kitchen includes a 7-cubic-foot chest refrigerator, 5-burner cooktop gas stove, double sink, plenty of cabinet space, and a 3-stage UV carbon block water filter for great-tasting drinking water.
The common space is very simply furnished, zen style, with tapestries on one wall and a large area yoga mat (6 X 10 ft area of 3/4 inch puzzle mats) in the living room with an Omni Gym yoga swing hanging from the ceiling. Your private furnished bedroom pictured contains a full-size bed (52" x 72", smaller than queen-size) high enough to see the ocean while laying down. It's a firm newer mattress on a platform, without box spring. Kaypacha, the well-known astrologer, lived in this room when he began "The Pele Report" and built the furniture currently in the room (see host references). Sheets, pillow, comforter, blanket, and towel provided. There is also a smaller room in the house with a view of the sunset and steam plume, containing only an REI "camp bed" (3.5" x 30" x 78") and a chair. There is no couch or TV in the home. Musicians love the acoustics for playing music. There is a guitar available for your use at the house and sometimes a djembe drum as well.
The nearest bus is 3 miles away by roads and runs just 2-3 times a day, so having a car is a necessity here unless you love to walk a lot. The nearest town is Pahoa and takes 20 minutes by car. There is a large heath food store as well as grocery store and many restaurants and specialty shops. Kehena Beach, Puna's popular blank-sand nude beach, is a 15-minute drive. I am available to be your personal tour guide if you like.
Please inquire with the "Contact Host" button and do not click on the "Request to Book" button until after we have talked on the phone. This will actually expedite getting your message to me, and allows us more time to communicate before the reservation request must be accepted or declined. If you message me your phone number, email, or website, it will probably be automatically removed from your message before I receive it, so let me know in a creative way how I can find your number. Please also include the password "pahoehoe" in your message to show that you really did read this entire description. I am NOT open to any rental arrangement that is not booked and prepaid through Air BnB. Please, do not come to this property without a reservation or appointment, out of respect for the privacy of those staying here.
In your inquiry, please share a little about yourself and your lifestyle, or have a completed profile with photo, as I have done. Help me get to know you, so I feel comfortable inviting you to stay in my home.
Thank you so much; Aloha and Blessings!
For breakfast, I can serve you a bowl of all-raw and organic extra-rich cacao banana fig sunflower smoothie. Everyone loves it! $7 for a bowl, and needs to be ordered the day before so ingredients can be soaked overnight. A mountain bike is available for rent ($15/day), making it easy to get to the active lava flow.
Interaction with guests
I love to interact when guests want to connect, and I totally respect and appreciate it when they request solitude. I am happy to answer any questions guests have about all that there is to do here. I enjoy taking people on hikes. If you were interested in coming to Ecstatic Dance and to the drum circle on the beach on Sundays, sometimes followed by a mantra rock dance kirtan, that would be awesome.
Other things to note
Please note that the "cleaning" fee is not just for cleaning, as each rental requires a considerable amount of time of the host, well beyond washing the sheets and towels, regardless of how short the stay. So I still ask that you leave the premises as clean as possible. Thank you. :)
Quiet hours are from 10:00pm to 6:00am. Please refrain from using kitchen or shower during these hours. Registered guests only. Please conserve water; no baths please. While there is plenty of power for laptops or cell phones, appliances with a heating element such as a hair dryers, toasters, or irons will overload the system. Front door and rear deck screen door are to be kept closed at all times to keep crawling critters from entering house. There is plenty of air flow when you open the windows. The bedroom windows must be closed while guest is gone and whenever it rains due to the strong wind that comes with the unpredictable short rain showers. No smoking, pets, or use of candles or incense allowed on property.
Please remove your shoes before entering the house, and plan to arrive before dark for your first time here, as it can be difficult to find after dark. It gets dark at 6:00 pm in winter and 7:00 pm in summer.
Cancel up to 7 days before your trip and get a 50% refund. Cancel within 7 days of your trip and the reservation is non-refundable.

I fell in love with Hawaii on my first trip here in 1988 and visited many times before finally moving here to stay in 2007 and buying some raw lava land to build my home on it. I particularly love living on the lava because I like wide open spaces where you can see for miles. I feel an expanded state of mind in this environment. Being so near an active volcano where the goddess Pele resides, there is a strong energy of transformation which can support whatever sort of healing, shift, or release is needed in your life. Outside of work, my activities include hiking, biking, swimming, dancing, yoga, and meditation.
