Location

Granada, Nicaragua

El Calle Arsenal is a quant one way street bordered by multiple dining options, art galleries, and the oldest standing church in the Americas, Iglesias San Francisco (1524). Adjacent to the church is Museo Antigua Contento de San Francisco (1529). An outside corridor of Nicaragua’s pre-Colombian religious sculptures (AD 800-1200) is most interesting. The interior garden is graced by towering 100-year old Palms which are visible from your bedroom balcony. Breezy cobblestone streets lead you to the shores of Lake Cocibolca or Nicaragua where fresh coconut water can be enjoyed as you return via Calle Calzada. Here are the greatest concentration of restaurants, bars and shopping. There is an excellent Artesian bakery across from Guadalupe Church. The building is white trimmed in blue and serves an excellent cappuccino and scrumptious baked goods.

During happy hour (4-6) at Bistro Estrada on Fridays you will probably meet “gringos” who gather there occasionally to meet new arrivals. There you can catch up on the local news, ask about living abroad, join a group for dinner or attend performances at Casa de los Tres Mundos (3 worlds). Casa Emma was once part of this elegant restored cultural center which was once a municipal theatre, then a private residence and now hosts cultural exhibits, concerts and special cultural events.
