Where you’ll be

Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

San Giacomo is a picturesque working class district of Trieste. In my opinion it is the only district in Trieste that has maintained its identity and somewhat its independence, without being completely incorporated by the city of Trieste. San Giacomo is where the people live. Here lives a significant community of people with Balkan origins, which gives to this part of the town a mitteleuropean flair.

In no more than 5 minutes’ walk you will find everything for the everyday life, such as supermarkets, pharmacy, banks, pizzerias, bars, cobbler, bakery, fishmonger, butcher, laundry, mail,...

Every Saturday (07:30 - 14:00), in the adjacent Campo San Giacomo, the market of local producers is held (fruit, vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, ...)

In the immediate vicinity starts the G. Cottur cycle path (formerly an Austrian railway), which goes as far as the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve and finally in Slovenia. The route is initially paved (city stretch), then unpaved (gravel - not good for road bikes). You start in a city environment and, in about a hour, you will admire beautiful views and bucolic landscapes, orchards, woods, cliffs and the Karst in all its forms (have a look on the internet the pictures related to "pista ciclabile trieste val rosandra" and you will have an idea...).

All shops are open from Tuesday to Saturday, some also on Mondays and Sundays.
