Where you’ll be

Coruche, Portugal

"Coruche marks the southern limit of the Ribatejo region, in the largest municipality in the district of Santarém and the tenth largest in Portugal.Ribatejo is said to be pure emotion and Coruche combines the privilege of beauty and good. About 50% of the municipality is forest, in a mixed cork oak forest, of cork oak and meek pine; ranks of excellence, both for the products generated, wood, cork and pine nuts of quality and economic value, both for the richness of fauna and flora but also for the high environmental contribution and combined ecological value.
The cork oak forest is a remarkable case of renewal, sustainable exploitation and what makes this territory special. Because of the concentration of forestry, industry and Research & Development domains; because about 8% of cork is extracted from Portugal and the country is a world leader; because 5 million cork stoppers come out worldwide every day. For all this, Coruche proves why it calls itself the World Capital of Cork. Between the Montado de Sobro moor and the verdant plain of Lezíria, Coruche offers excellent conditions for nature tourism, complemented by enogastronomic experiences and accommodation in rural areas, in typical Ribatejo estates or in modern spaces. From the different environments of evasion and coexistence with nature, it is suggested the hiking trails and paths, river and streams, weirs and open or winding paths; hot air balloon rides; horseback riding; mountain biking; motorsport; or the practice of recreational and nautical activities, such as river fishing in the fishing grounds, the riverside front of Coruche or Santa Justa; the descent of the river in a canoe or water skiing in the artificial lake of Quinta Grande. On the side of the built cultural heritage it is suggested a visit to the Observatory of Sobreiro and Cork and the preserved historical center of the village. Here, it is recommended the itinerary of the sacred, starting with the promontory and Chapel of Our Lady of Castle, the sixteenth-century temple of mercy, mother church, church of St. Peter, church of St. Anthony among many other churches in the different parishes.
The visit to the Municipal Museum and its specialized museum centers of tauromaquia, rural nucleus, the Salgueiro Maia museum school in the locality of São Torcato and to finish, are other visits that should not be missed as well as a visit to the Tourism post and Montado Shop where pieces of handicrafts and local products that characterize the municipality are presented.
Coruche hosts a set of annual activities and festivities that stand out for their cultural and tourist potential: In May, the gastronomic event "Sabores do Toiro Bravo” and the economic activity fair “FICOR (International Cork Fair)"; in June, the 24-hour BTT CCH; from June to August, the cycle of "Sons of Summer”; in August, the "Festivals in Honor of Our Lady of Castle”; in October, the Book Fair, the "Journeys of Gastronomy” and the "Sabores do Arroz”
