Enjoy the enchanting beachfront palapa of Casa de Dos Mulas - soaring thatched roof & open air views of Banderas Bay, SW of Puerto Vallarta, amidst the embrace of jungle flora in the Los Chonchos eco-preserve. Secluded, accessible only by boat, this romantic hide-away offers relaxation, inspiration & adventure. Watch whales, manta rays, dolphins, birds & butterflies from the privacy of your beachside deck. Kayak, fish, snorkel or hike from our 3 beautiful beaches.

The space
Close to Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa, in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, this well equipped, beautifully appointed palapa on Banderas Bay sleeps two to four people comfortably, and a fifth person on the daybed in the living room. Filled with local artisan crafted furnishings, the palapa includes a well equipped kitchen, great room, dining table, open decks, two separate bedrooms with queen- and full-size beds, and one bathroom. The palapa architecture is fully open to nature, with the only three sides to the building, and the fourth open to the sea. This is the ultimate jungle “glamping” experience, good for adventurous and self-reliant types who love solitude and want to experience of the true jungle of the Mexican Riviera while enjoying the conveniences of a bathroom, kitchen and beds. Whether watching the ocean, taking in the amazing thatched roof, or admiring the wildlife, the Dos Mulas palapa in a lovely eco preserve allows you to unplug from your every day stress and relax.

Even the water taxi ride is part of the vacation, leaving Boca de Tomatlan to Los Chonchos usually twice a day but only in the morning during COVID as of Feb. 2021. Water taxi schedule is subject to change during COVID-19. As of 2021, the Nayeley water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan is running daily. (A private boat is about 2000-2500 pesos one way). Departing Boca de Tomatlan at 9am (sometimes at 3pm on Sunday but don’t count on it) and leaving Chonchos to Boca at 11am (and 5pm Sunday, maybe). 180 pesos per person. Allow 45-90 minutes depending on size of boat and smoothness of the sea. There are no roads to this eco village, so the life here unfolds differently than in a town or city. Ideal for a honeymoon, a family vacation or a get-away with best friends. You can arrive when you’d like, but please let us know when so that staff can schedule to meet you.

Most people bring groceries from Puerto Vallarta. Our taxi driver Jesus can pick you up at the airport, take you to your hotel, escort you to the markets, and take you to Boca de Tomatlan to catch the water taxi. We recommend buying fresh corn tortillas in Boca. You can buy additional groceries in nearby Chimo, a fishing village accessible by foot or water taxi.

If you would enjoy dining out, you can go to Arturo’s Sunset restaurant in Chimo—he is the fisherman and proprietor & the food is delicious!

Minimum booking is 2 nights. Maximum booking is 30 days. A 15% discount applies when you stay for a week. A 25% discount applies when you stay for a month. $5 per night per person will be added if more than 2 guests book to cover extra cleaning, bottled water, propane & laundry.

Check in can be as early as 10am, when you arrive from the 9am water taxi.

Check out time is 10:30am. You can hang out on the beach or restaurant and then take the 11am or 5pm water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlan.

It is highly recommended to stay in Puerto Vallarta the night you arrive by plane. It’s too much travel in one day to get to Los Chonchos. Have a nice dinner, shop for groceries and get a good night’s rest. Then, come to Los Chonchos the next day. In the winter, the water may be rough and you need to account for the potential of a half day of travel. The same for leaving Los Chonchos. If the water is too rough for the water taxi to land, they will take you to the next village over, which is Chimo. There, the villagers will help you & carry your luggage on their mules and they will take you to Dos Mulas. In the winter, it is often safer to book a night in Puerto Vallarta on your way home, in case the unexpected occurs due to the weather and ocean conditions in the Bay.

Where you’ll be

Chimo, Jalisco, Mexico

Los Chonchos is an eco-preserve situated south of Puerto Vallerta in a protected 40 acres of jungle. There are only 20 palapas in this beautiful, untouched area of Mexico. There are three amazing beaches, starting with the small cove the water taxi lands on, the pebble beach on which sits Casa de Dos Mulas, and the long beach just 5 minutes walk (as shown in the pictures) from the palapa. You are likely to be the only one on the beach! Keep to yourself, or join the other visitors and inhabitants twice a day as the water taxi visits, help the new visitors off the taxi, and share the news of the day - it is entirely up to you! Walk to Chimo or hop onto the water taxi for a 5-min ride, for seafood, groceries and cookies. You can also take the water taxi to Pizoto for winter surfing, or Yelapa for hiking to waterfalls or eating at restaurants.

During your stay

Dos Mulas is one of the most popular palapas to rent in Los Chonchos. We are its new owners and we look forward to sharing this piece of paradise with you!

On booking the palapa, we will provide all the necessary information on the how, when, why, who and where's of getting to Los Chonchos, starting with arriving in vibrant Puerto Vallarta, shopping for food, finding the water taxi, etc., etc. The palapa will be ready for your arrival and the onsite staff will be there to assist you. We will be available by phone during your stay if you purchase a local cell phone at Telcel or Moviestar with “two-bar coverage.” Otherwise, cell and WiFi coverage can be spotty.

Basic logistics to help you plan your stay at Dos Mulas:

Fly into Puerto Vallarta Airport ("PVR").
Allow time to get through customs (30-45 min. approx).

Part A) Taxi to a hotel in Puerto Vallarta's El Centro, the Romantic Zone (15-20 min). Stay overnight. Shop, eat a nice meal, buy groceries if you're planning to cook. Continue the next AM with directions under Part B.

Part B) Taxi south 1 hour, non-rushing, (or 75 min directly from airport) to seaside village of Boca de Tomatlan, where you will meet the Nayely Water Taxi at the dock. It runs twice daily, at 9am and 3pm, for 250 pesos ($15 US) per person one way, paid after you're on the boat. Allow 40-60 minutes along a stunningly vivid coastline to arrive at Los Chonchos. COVID SCHEDULE MAY VARY. Sometimes it only runs once a day, in the morning, except on Sundays the full schedule is operating. Sometimes they can skip a day.

Alternative Option) Charter a private boat through Los Chonchos, $150 US one-way. I would arrange this for you in advance.

Leaving Los Chonchos: Nayely Water Taxi picks up at Chonchos about 11am and 5pm and will have you at Boca de Tomatlan in an hour. Taxis are waiting dockside, and you can take them to Puerto Vallarta or the airport, but we encourage you to schedule with our driver Jesus, who will take great care of you.

Depending on your flight schedule, you might stay the night in Puerto Vallarta before leaving.

Having skipped the overnight stay in Puerto Vallarta both coming and going to Dos Mulas at Los Chonchos, I strongly recommend staying in PV at the beginning and end of your trip. PV has wonderful people, food and ambience and when you stay there upon entry, your relaxation begins. Then you can really enjoy the next part of the journey—going to Boca & taking the water taxi. On the return, it’s good to stay in PV because the weather or a broken water taxi can cause delays in getting you back to PV for same day flight.

From Nov-April, the Puerto Vallarta farmer's market takes place on Saturdays. A nice entry would be to arrive Friday, shop Saturday and catch the 3pm water taxi from Boca to Chonchos.
