The Big House on the Little Farm

Stay in a 1990's Ranch style house on a private lane on a small working farm in the Laurel Highlands. Built as a passive solar house, we've added 45 solar panels and it's now a grid-connected solar powered house.
We are close to ski resorts like Seven Springs (12 miles) and Hidden Valley (5 miles). We are only a short drive from the Flight 93 Memorial, Frank Lloyd Wright's "Fallingwater", the rapids at Ohiopyle, and the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail.

The space
Our one story, wheelchair accessible house has a large deck (two bedrooms access the deck through French doors) and a great room with a fireplace, a wood stove, and a baby grand piano. There is a full kitchen that has everything you need to cook with and a gas grill on the deck. We have a greenhouse and a large cut flower garden. We grow blueberries, asparagus , and many other veggies. We have a large pond with a deck and a dock for swimming and canoeing. Feed the fish and ducks! We have several fire circles and a volleyball court. Kids can ride bikes safely on our lane and trails and fly drones and kites. There are wineries, golf courses and several State Parks nearby. In the winter you can cross country ski right out the door and into the woods, snowshoe across the fields, or use snowmobile trails on the ridge nearby. Watch the leaves change, the birds on their migration flights, try light free stargazing, and observe all kinds of wildlife all year around!

Other things to note
Our lane is a 1/4 of a mile long and in the winter we will plow to get you in or out if necessary. We do strongly recommend that you have a 4WD or AWD vehicle to come here during winter.

There will be customers driving in and out of our sales area and gardens a hundred yards below the Big House during farm season (May to October). We also rent out acreage to local farmers and there will sometimes be tractors working the fields near the house.

Due to the pandemic, we will block availability for 3 days both before and after each booking - to clean and sanitize for your and our protection.

Pets are allowed under certain conditions...See our pet policy (under "rules" before you book!
Our guests can have friends over to visit, but we don't allow large parties to break out here.

Location

We're off of the main road and it's quiet most of the time...occasional tractor or tiller noise during farm season.
The nearest grocery is 8 miles away (there's a convenience store 2 miles away), so bring some food.

I'm retired...sort of. These days I help my wife Sue with her farm business, the Putman Place. I was in county government and an elected official. Now I'm a farmer, lumberjack, handyman, tiller, fence mender, blueberry picker, asparagus grader, bread baker, canoeing instructor, greenhouse operator, and...a B&B host - all here at our home. Sue and I have made friends all over, in big cities where we've lived ( Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, D.C., and Columbus ) and visiting big countries (Australia, Brazil, & Canada). Now we want to meet you here at the Big House - All are welcome here!
