Our off-grid tiny house, "Moby," packs off-grid amenities into a cozy space, perched in a grassy opening backed by spruce woods on the edge of the bluff above Homer. Completely self-contained and well-suited for couples or a solo traveler. The tiny house is built on a 24’ Tumbleweed trailer with custom blue pine interior, and plenty of wood-framed windows to take in the enormous glacier views.

The space
Essential amenities are all efficiently arranged in a petite floorplan: Moby sports a comfy queen-sized mattress and premium bedding in the loft sleeping area (with ample windows and enough head room to sit up all around the loft), solar-powered electricity, hot/cold running water and shower, kitchenette with two-burner propane cooktop and small fridge, and vented composting toilet. Moby is equipped with a mini wood-stove to knock the chill off Alaska nights (we provide firewood). Black-out shades afford a respite from the midnight sun.
Guests should be able to climb a ladder comfortably to get in and out of bed, and won’t mind walking the 300 foot grassy path to the tiny house from our gravel parking area at the end of the road. We’re not connected to city water or power, so we practice conservation. Batteries store the solar electricity, and will light the house, run the fridge, charge all your electronic devices and keep the wifi Internet running 24-7. Be prepared: battery power won’t sustain energy-hogs like microwaves, toasters, or hairdryers. Moby holds over 40 gallons of water, which typically is enough for two conscientious people to cook, clean and have an 8-minute shower each during a short stay (we’ll refill the water from the well during longer stays).

Where you’ll be

Homer, Alaska, United States

Our property sits atop the bluff above Homer at the end of Skyline Drive, with commanding views of the entirety of the bay and the glaciers of Kachemak Bay State Park and Kenai Fjords. We’re far enough out to be your quiet base for a peaceful day watching the wildlife come and go or contemplating the light on the water, but still just a few minutes’ drive from the shopping, restaurants and activities on the Homer Spit.

I’ve been living the tiny house life in Alaska with my partner Joolee since 2009 to support our minimalist, world-travelling lifestyle. She and I built our own tiny house on our land in Homer in 2014, and now we’ve completed a second tiny house to share the experience with other travelers. We try to travel outside the country at least once each year. We gravitate to uniquely-built and creative tiny spaces when we travel.
