Location

Tripoli, North Governorate, Lebanon

Duplex is located 5 km from Tripoli.
Tripoli (600,000 inhabitants) is Lebanon's second largest city. And yet, for the visitor who arrives from the capital, on many levels, it is the antithesis, its atmosphere has more to do with Damascus or Cairo. The dress is discreet and the gesture reserved.

Of all the influences that Tripoli experienced, it was the Mamluk period (14th and 15th centuries) that left its mark on the city. We find the testimony in a host of buildings: madrasas, mausoleums, minarets, hospitals.

Mamluk art is characterized by alternating colored seating and polychrome stone and marble veneers as well as epigraphic bands running along the façade. The portals and the ground are decorated with a labyrinth of calligraphy and arabesques, as for the Taynal mosque, or the Al Muallak mosque (suspended) sitting on a bow that spans the street.

Not to be missed either, the Great Mosque, whose minaret was a steeple of a cross church. Another jewel of Mamluk architecture, the Masdrasa Al Qartawiya with its superb inlaid ceilings. Hammam Al Jadid (the new hammam) is one of the most beautiful of the time, and also the largest. Hammam el Abed, still in use, with its perforated domes that let filter a multicolored light and its central fountain, invariably plunges the visitor into the universe of 1001 nights.

Tripoli has kept its souks. They are besides the most famous of Lebanon, not only for their magnificent architecture of partially covered arches, but especially for the mafrouké, knéfé, znoud el sitt, jazarié, atayef, or the famous bakalawas, these pastries to which it is so hard to resist.

Stroll at leisure in these shopping alleys, including Souk Haraj, the only covered souk of the city, or Souk el Attarine (perfumers) and in his khans (caravanserais), like Khan Alkhiyyatine (tailors) or Khan AlMasriyyine (of Egyptians).

On the hill, perched 130 m, the Citadel Saint-Gilles (eleventh century) was several times burned, demolished, then rebuilt. The last restoration dates from the nineteenth century. This fort offers splendid panoramic views of the city.

Duplex is 39 km from Jbeil (Byblos).
Byblos is one of the oldest cities in the world still inhabited. Like its country, the city has been the crossroads of many civilizations, crossing which is reflected by its many historical sites with very diverse architectures. You will visit without fail the ancient site of the city, where you will discover Roman columns, Phoenician walls, Persian fortifications, crossed citadel. Inescapable element of the site, the tombs of the Byblos kings including that of Ahiram. His sarcophagus has the oldest inscription in Phenicia. It is now exposed to the Beirut Museum. Beyond the ancient site, you will not be able to miss its fishing port, true symbol of Byblos.
