Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Pocket of peace just outside city limits. Tiny Home sits on hill overlooking 2-acre native flower nursery, orchard, meadows and surrounding mountains. Feels like you're in the country, yet you're a 10-15 min drive from eclectic downtown & famous Biltmore. Pine-cedar paneled 8'x24' studio layout is bright and sunny with high ceilings. Full-size bath/tub. Comfy queen-size bed. Full-size mattress in loft. Well-equipped kitchen. Composting toilet. Please see Location section for post-hurricane info.

The space
Whether you'd like a unique place to stay while exploring Asheville, or are seeking a restorative and/or educational farm retreat, this place suits all types of needs. While Asheville is well-known for its restaurants (which you should definitely explore), this region also has many exceptional small farms, and you're staying at one of them! (Called M. R. Gardens). We primarily focus on growing native flowers, but also have several fruit trees and a small organic vegetable garden. We offer the option for guests to purchase a seasonal harvest of unique fruit/veggies such as asparagus (early spring), goumi berries (late spring), and figs (late fall). Don't be afraid to cook in the small space, which many people remark is more spacious than they expected. In addition to the fully equipped kitchen, you have access to a propane grill outside. For those interested in learning more about sustainable gardening, we also offer tours and other experiences. The property changes dramatically from month to month as different flowers are in bloom. By late November, most vegetation is dormant, and seeds are left in place of flowers for wildlife to graze. If you're missing green plants in February, we do recommend the greenhouse tour as it is the most full of life at that time. The passive solar design of the greenhouse is very unique and ahead of its time.

When you stay at M. R. Gardens, you can feel connected to the community simply because we couldn't have developed our native flower nursery without the help of Airbnb! Even though native plants are critical for the health of the ecosystem, these types of flowers are relatively new to the horticultural industry in the U.S. so it takes many years to build a nursery. Additional income, especially during the off-season, has been crucial, and the two businesses work hand-in-hand, especially since our tiny house cleaner also transplants for us in the nursery. Many thanks to visitors who choose to stay here!

Guest access
We hope your outdoor experience is just as much a part of your stay as your indoor one. A seating area with Adirondack chairs overlooks the property and surrounding hills. From there, you are welcome to walk the mowed path for a full view of the mountains. If you're interested in seeing the rest of the property—which includes a passive solar greenhouse, native flower gardens, organic vegetable beds, fruit trees, and naturalized meadows—we ask that you set up an appointment for a tour. Note that the greenhouse is open to the public some days late March through early June and again in September and October, but the traffic is light and shouldn't disturb you.

Other things to note
We stock the kitchen with Keurig pods of coffee, tea and other hot drinks. The bathroom has all natural shampoos and soaps.

Guests must be willing to use the composting toilet properly. That means everyone must always sit to use the toilet. We provide explanations and written directions on the rest.

NO SMOKING of anything under any circumstances. No candles, incense or open flames of any sort please.

We enjoy it when children stay here, but if they're under the age of 7 and in the loft, a parent should sleep next to them. We currently don't have a guardrail in the loft. Children under 5 should stay on the main floor and not climb the ladder.

Please don't sit on the fold-down/flip-up table or put anything heavy on it because it is not strong enough to hold much weight.

Please wash any dishes you use, as well as the outside propane grill if you use it. (We provide directions on how).

Not suitable for pets.

Please respect the peace and quiet of our neighborhood. No parties.

Only those who are accounted for on your reservation are allowed to stay in the tiny house. If you have any unexpected guests, even those who are just staying for the day, please let us know.

While you are welcome to open screened windows to let air in, please keep the front door shut so insects stay outside.

If you have a drone, please do not use it on this property. Neighbors appreciate their privacy.

We follow Airbnb's enhanced cleaning protocol, which was developed with expert guidance. We have your best interest at heart!

Neighbourhood highlights

We're a friendly neighborhood with lots of walkers. Access to the Mountains to Sea trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway is a five minute drive away. We're in easy driving distance from all that Western North Carolina has to offer—hiking, biking, paddling, zip-lining and other outdoor adventures, not to mention yoga studios, spas and healing arts. Almost all guests love our location because our quaint neighborhood and small farm offer the feel of the country, yet we're just a couple minute drive from stores and breweries, and another 10-15 minutes to downtown and other major attractions. If you're looking for a location in walking distance to bars, or for complete seclusion in the woods, then you'll likely find other places more suited for your needs than our small urban farm.

My work: Owner of M R Gardens
Most of my time lately is spent running my small farm and plant business. I have a natives nursery with a passive solar greenhouse, and also create garden designs. In my 20s, traveling was a big part of my life. Australia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the deserts of Utah are some of my favorite memories. I also worked at an eco-resort in St. John USVI. Life has taken me full circle, and now I can help bring to others what traveling once gave to me.
