Great check-in experience
100% of recent guests gave the check-in process a 5-star rating.
Built in 2009, our earth sheltered, solar powered home is situated on 3 acres along the Rainy River. It's a great place to relax and unwind, view the wild life, watch the birds, sit by a camp fire etc.

The space
This is a two bedroom home. Ours is in the east end of the home while the guest room is in the west end, overlooking the river.

The guest room has a queen size bed with an in room vanity. The adjoining 4 piece bathroom is reserved for guest use only.

Let us know if you need sleeping arrangements for more than two and we can discuss the options.

A hearty home cooked breakfast is included with your stay and the menu changes daily. Choices MAY include items such as eggs (fried, boiled, poached, scrambled, omelette, frittata), toast (usually with my homemade bread), pancakes, sausage, bacon, whole grain porridge, yogurt, with juice, tea, chai, coffee etc.

Guest access
When not in their bedroom, guests are welcome to relax in the living room, dining room, or kitchen.

Our outdoor areas are also available for guest use. Whether in a lounge chair on the patio or at the picnic table under the big pine, there's plenty of space to unwind.

We have a fire pit down by the river. With advance notice we can easily make it ready for guest use.

Our internet is received via a canopy service and unfortunately is not very stable. When it is working, guests are welcome to use the WIFI to check their email. WIFI access information is available in the guest room.

Other things to note
We have many modern conveniences (central vac, dishwasher, washer, microwave, toaster, hair dryer, Internet, satellite TV etc). However, AS WE LIVE ENTIRELY OFF THE GRID, we are very conscious of how and when we use electricity. "Conservation" and "Make hay while the sun shines!" are two rules we live by in our solar powered home.

Location

Stratton, Ontario, Canada

Ours is a rural setting, on the Rainy River, approximately 7 kms west of the town of Stratton.

It's a great stop over spot for people travelling between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario or for those with business or recreational interests in this corner of north western Ontario.

The number of fishing boats that we see anchored out front of our property is testament to the fact that the fishing is good here! Species include walleye, bass, pike, sturgeon. (Licences and bait available at outlets in Rainy River, Emo, or Fort Frances)

Short version: Curious, sociable, quiet, respectful. Long version: Terry and I retired from the Canadian federal government in 2013 and 2014. Our working lives were interesting but our retired life is far better! We strive to live simply. Our pursuits are spending time with family and friends, maintaining a vegetable garden, cooking and going bike riding, kayaking, camping, and fishing. We thoroughly enjoy travelling and have spent many winter months exploring warmer parts of the world. During the summer months, even though we are home (in north western Ontario) we still get to experience “travelling the world” as we welcome Airbnb guests from far and wide.
