COVID-19 UPDATE 28th September 2020

We have had a good summer and are now looking forwards to autumn and winter at the cottages.

We are reviewing the risk assessment that we carried out in July at Dean Cottages. We will be continuing to adhere closely to government guidance to self catering establishments, and for the autumn / winter season we are introducing a 3 night quarantine period between bookings. This only applies to future bookings. We have been awarded both Vsit England's "Good to Go", and the AA "Covid-19 Confident" accreditations.

We are continuing to offer full refunds in the case of you being unable to travel owing to Corona Virus lockdown restrictions in either your or our postcode.

One significant change that we are really pleased with, is our new digital guidebook which we provide to guests via an App. All the information that you will need for your stay is on there from the access information, to the cottage manual, to our local walks! Perfect!

About Little Owl

Little Owl is one of a cluster of romantic hideaways at Dean Cottages.

Perched on a sunny hillside at the edge of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, Area of Outstanding natural beauty, this stunning studio apartment is a haven of peace and tranquillity, perfect for those who enjoy nature, walking, biking, canoeing and fishing.

As soon as you turn off the main road and start the drive up to Little Owl you will feel that you are really escaping to that rural idyll! The views are amazing! The studio is located at the end of a quiet track with parking just outside, and overlooking a small Common –perfect for exercising the dog, or taking an evening stroll to admire the lovely views.

Footpaths lead from the front door onto a vast network of Forest paths and tracks; you can literally walk for miles! If you have one, your dog will be super excited to arrive here with so many foresty sniffs to investigate and after all the walking, he or she will be able to cuddle up in the studio. Pet throws and welcome doggie biscuits are provided.

Little Owl has its own private furnished patio at the door. A couple of minutes walk downhill there is an additional enclosed 1/3 acre wildlife garden with it’s own bird hide and pond which is alive with frogs, newts, and stunning dragonflies. Admire the views from the picnic table with a glass of wine on a sunny evening –Bliss!

The studio has been lovingly created by owners Lis and Karen. Inside Little Owl is deceptively spacious, clean, bright and airy. Once inside the living area is open plan and all on one level. It benefits from a with 33” flat screen TV, comfy sofa, and leather easy chair with reading lamp. The bedroom zone has a stylish comfy bed and plenty of storage for two.

If you don’t feel like going out, you will feel quite at home cooking in the kitchen which is surprisingly spacious and very well equipped for a studio with plenty of work surface, full sized oven, microwave and even a breakfast bar with stools. There is a pull out dining table and chairs for more formal dining.

Little Owl has a light and airy shower room, which is separate to the main living area.

Heating is via a modern convector style heater, and heated towel rail in the shower room. This is supplemented by a flame-effect wall mounted heater, which is great for creating a romantic atmosphere.

Included in the price: electricity, WiFi, milk, luxury biscuits, and local award winning apple juice. There are teas and coffees for your arrival and a starter pack of capsules for the Nesspresso machine is also provided. Also included; thorough cleaning prior to your arrival and upon departure as well as bed linen and towels for two.

For Fido we include sofa throws and towels as well as bags for our poo bins. There is a dog wash tap near the wildlife garden. He will be allowed on the sofa and bed, but doggie throws MUST be used, of course. The are outside Little Owl is unfenced as it belongs to Forestry England and not to us, but this does mean that you and your dog can have full access to it for a game of ball, or just a stroll! The wildlife garden is large and fenced. We are happy for dogs to be off lead, but it not guaranteed dog proof.

Please note that access is via single track unmade road and can be quite bumpy
There are a number of easy walks in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, but the walks from the door are all of moderate difficulty (up and down hill and some on rough paths)
The wildlife garden is 30 metres down a fairly steep hill, but reasonably level once you get there.
Free WiFi via mobile device ensures good connectivity at this cottage although it is now unlimited, so you can stream your favourite programmes and films.
A bookable laundry room and an additional shared freezer are located down below the studio, in our car port.

There are many outdoor activities available in the Forest; hire a canoe or a kayak and paddle down the Wye, or a mountain bike and take to the cycle tracks which lead you through mile after mile of beautiful woodland.

For those interested in history, within half an hour there are the Dean Heritage Centre and the border castles of Chepstow and Goodrich to name but a few. A bit further afield, Hereford cathedral where you can view the famous Mappa Mundi, Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral are well worth the visit.

The Cotswolds, the Brecon Beacons and the Malvern Hills are all less than an hours drive away.

Mitcheldean is the nearest town (3 miles away), providing a small supermarket, Post Office, Butcher's, takeaways and Chemist's. There is a wider variety of shops and facilities at Cinderford, 5 miles away.

Guest access
The whole studio is available for let and has a private entrance direct from Forestry land. No need to enter our property. There is one private patio for the exclusive use of guests at Little Owl, with the addition of a large garden area shared with 2 other holiday lets. There is a designated shared laundry room. There is no charge made for this service, however it is only available to guests staying a week or longer and by prior arrangement.

We have a guest feedback form and one of the questions we ask is "What did you like most about your stay?" The answer is almost always the beautiful location and the peace and quiet. There are many footpaths all over the Forest of Dean and you can access this network from the cottage door. There is woodland within a short distance, and there are lots of small streams and brooks, so the sound of water is often what you will hear on a walk; that and the birdsong.

We are on the sunny side of the valley and almost at the top of the hill so you can sit in the sun in the evening with a glass of wine, and admire the views. The penalty for this however is that most walks from the cottage end with a 10 minute uphill walk. We have few neighbours and there are more animals here than people - a donkey, sheep, hens, and lots of stunning horses. (These our our neighbours' animals not ours)

he Forest of Dean is an extensive area of ancient woodland stretching from Mitcheldean in the East as far west as the River Wye and south to the banks of the Severn. The region is rich in flora and fauna, and is beautiful in springtime when the woods are adorned with successive carpets of wild daffodils (Newent), bluebells and wood anenomes. Early morning or dusk are the best times of day to spot some of the wildlife including fallow deer and wild boar.

For avid bird lovers the Forest of Dean is a joy, with the possibility of spotting the goshawks at New Fancy View, the peregrine falcons at Symmonds Yat Rock, dippers nesting in the banks of a stream or the pied flycatchers which make their nests in the hollowed out trunk of an oak tree.

In summer be sure to look out for the many and varied butterflies which reside in the Forest including the white admiral, purple hairstreak and sliver washed fritillary. The Forest is an undulating landscape and your walks may well be accompanied by the sound of a stream babbling along a valley bottom as well as strident birdsong.

There are many views to be admired from the hill tops across Forest and rivers, towards the Malvern Hills or to the Welsh Mountains across the border. Try May Hill for the best vantage point over the Forest!
