8km outside Kurseong, and one hour from Darjeeling, Meghmala is a simple village homestay where you can get away from it all. This downstairs bedroom, with attached bathroom also has access to a small common living area. This sleepy hamlet is often nestled in the clouds but for lucky ones offers spectacular views down over the rolling tea gardens to the plains and Rivers Teesta and Mahananda. See our other listings for more rooms.

The space
Space sleeps two adults and one child comfortably. We can use additional divan beds on the lounge in summer season, and you can also book our upstairs attic room. It is also possible to book the whole place. See our other listings for details.

Sightseeing in the area
Chimney
The Chimney is the relic of the second cottage built by the British on their way to Darjeeling. While building the Old Military Road between 1839 and 1842. The site of the current Chimney was the main fire in the Cottage which provided accommodation for the Senior British Officers who were supervising the construction of the road. Once the road was completed, the cottage was dismantled and now just the Chimney remains. The first cottage still stands to this day, in Pankhabari.
The Chimney is a short walk from the cottage, and gives the village its name.
Bagora
This is a village about 8km from Chimney, on the Old Military Road. It’s possible to walk there as a short hike/ day-trek and usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. There are a number of small tea shops where you can have some tea and refreshments.
Chatakpur
Another pretty mountain village with views of the High Himalayas. You can hire a taxi to take you to Chatakpur and Bagora. (Rs. 800)
Deer Park and Forest Museum
The Dowhill Deer Park and Forest Museum are located about 5 km from the cottage. It is possible to take a short trek from the cottage to visit the Park and Museum. Alternatively, it is possible to combine this visit with your taxi to/from Kurseong by hiring a car for a half day.
There are a number of short walks and paths through the forest around the cottage. Please ask at the property and Amal will be able to advise you about walks to the Monastery at 6th Mile, the Square Metre Garden Experimental Centre and also a 2km forest path that takes you towards Deorali.

Makaibari Tea Estate/ Castleton Tea Estate/ Monteviot Tea Estate / Singel Tea Estate
Visit some of Darjeeling’s most Renowned Tea Estates. This can also be combined with your onward/return journey.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Museum
Take a stroll around the Museum in Kurseong town.

Hey there! I'm from Ireland originally, but live in India. I love good food, bad TV, all kinds of music, and great movies. Also love to be sitting near a fire with a great book. My husband Roshan and I work for non-profit organisations in the Eastern Himalayas. We live in Darjeeling, India and try to visit Ireland at least once a year. We love to travel and meet new people. We really enjoy cooking and entertaining friends and guests at our home. We're very laid back, easy-going. We host at our family home in Darjeeling Town and handle bookings for our cottage in the village, where you will be looked after by our cousin Amal and his family.
