Where you’ll be

Zarkadia, Greece

Our house is located in the village of Zarkadia on the slope of the foothills of the Lekani mountains overlooking the Nestos Delta, the Aegean Sea and the island of Thassos. On a clear day you can also see the island of Samothraki and Athos, the monastic republic from your balcony. A refreshing wind blows in the evening from the mountains and makes the climate here particularly pleasant.
In the village there is a tavern, a pharmacy, two mini markets and two Kaffenio. A modern amphitheater is within walking distance.
The area is known for its beautiful landscapes and abundant flora and fauna. The lea of the Nestos River, its breakthrough through the mountains, known as Nestos Gorge, the lagoons and salt marshes in the Delta, and the adjacent mountainous aerea with its vast forests are the basis for the rich biodiversity of this region.
Ornithological, herpetological and botanically interested visitors can be certain of getting their money’s worth.
The river delta with its lagoons, the riparian forest, some freshwater lakes and seemingly endless beaches was declared a national park in 1998.
I will gladly introduce you to the area and its treasures of nature. I myself am a landscape ecologist and have been living and working here since 1990.
Culture lovers will also get their money. Thus, the ancient sites of Philippi, Lydia, Avdira, etc. are all within a half hour drive.
In general, our region has been spared from mass tourism and has retained its authenticity.
And finally, the beach holiday should not be neglected. You can reach the beautiful beach of Keramoti, a former fishing village, in 20 minutes by car, where you can choose either one of the beach bars or just a quiet nice place away from the hustle and bustle.
