Where you’ll be
County Galway, Ireland
We live on the now world famous Wild Atlantic Way and really have everything the holiday maker or business visitor requires on our doorstep. Within 1km we have 2 blue flag beaches, a large supermarket, a pub where there are regular live music sessions. We have a very private freshwater lake 1km walk to the north.
Within 4km we have a charming little seaside village of Spiddal where there are a further 2 beaches, 4 pubs, a couple of cafés, an artist workshop retail Centre, a Chinese takeaway (which has a very reasonable delivery service - menus provided in studio), a fast food outlet and a wonderful, genuine Italian “Pizzeria Fiordigrano”, where our friend Antonio serves up the very best pizzas this side of Sicily! He also makes some ridiculously good Tíramisu!
For more traditional Irish fare, another friend Brenda cooks great food at Giblin’s. Her husband, Ned provides the entertainment - live music most nights ranging from traditional Irish to ballads and blues.
Within 15km there is Barna, a charming seaside village with an array of bars and really good dining experiences - from informal bar food at Donnelly’s to fine dining at O’Gradys on the Pier or the West at the “12 Hotel” (so named after Connemara’s famed 12 Pins, mountain range to the west).
Between Barna and Galway city, there’s Salthill - with its famous 2km (4km if you continue on to the city) promenade along the beach and from where hardy sea-swimmers take to the Atlantic each day from Blackrock Pier & diving platform. There are a number of cafés, bars & restaurants here too.
And then, just to the east, there’s Galway city - a bustling medieval & university city squeezed between Lough Corrib and the Atlantic Ocean (both famous for their quality of fishing). I would need much more space here to tell you about even a fraction of the delights Galway has to offer.
There’s a great museum, any number of hotels and an eclectic shopping experience.
Quay Street will have a restaurant offering to suit all tastes however there are also many other high quality restaurants scattered around the city - including 2 Michelin Star restaurants; Enda McEvoy’s Loam and JP McMahon’s Aniar.
Suffice to say there is seldom a weekend that Galway doesn’t play host to some festival - most famous of them being Cúirt International Literary Festival in April, the International Arts Festival in July, followed by the Galway Races, a weeklong celebration of all things equine. Halloween in Galway is a particular treat whereby street artist company Macnas, take to the streets and wow the street-lined crowds - young and old with their themed parade. It’s a sight to behold and one that returns even the oldest spectators imagination to that of their youth.
Galway is now also in preparation for the highest cultural accolade, having been chosen to host European Capital of Culture in 2020. We try not to take all that Galway offers for granted! Galway is really great fun!!
You can access a full festival calendar by checking out galwaytourism.ie
To the west, there are charming coastal towns and villages like Ros Muc, Roundstone, Clifden, Letterfrack, Leenaun - all with the many beautiful seascapes and quiet beaches of Connemara - all sporting blue-flags for their cleanliness of waters and also safe to bathe in. The mountains of the Maum Turks and the 12 Pins offer a dramatic backdrop to Connemara. They’ve inspired many artists over the ages - perhaps most famous among them Paul Henry and latterly Kenneth Webb. They make for wonderful hiking however a moderate skill level and suitable attire is recommended.
We live in a Gaeltacht area where the ancient (5,000 years) and musical Irish language is spoken on a daily basis. We welcome any and all correspondence “as Gaeilge”; both Karen and I are fluent and daily speakers.
Here, Irish culture still holds strong - traditional song, dance and music still readily available.
We also have na hOileáin Árainn, the Aran Islands here on our doorstep. These are the most westerly inhabited islands in Europe. Inis Mór, the largest of the 3 is home to such wonders as UNESCO site of historic significance - Dún Aonghusa, a 1500BC hill fort, perched atop a 300ft cliff. Poll na bPéist, the Serpents Lair is also a sight to behold, a rectangular blowhole hewn by the Atlantic Ocean from the granite rock. It has recently been used by RedBull Cliff divers.
http://www.aranislands.ie/wp-content/uploads/IMG_6673.jpg
Inis Meáin, the middle island is quiet and a really different experience to the more developed Inis Mór.
To the south, Inis Oírr is the smallest but perhaps most charming of the three islands. From here you can enjoy views of the Cliffs of Moher, rising a majestic 704ft from the Wild Atlantic Way on the County Clare mainland to the east. This is a real treasure.

Ferry boats and flights to and from the islands are available just minutes away.
If you like cycling, golf, hill walking, sea fishing, lake or river angling, Connemara is for you. We have 5 championship golf courses within an hour from our door - ranging from the parkland course in Oughterard to wonderful links golf at Barna, Galway & Connemara (Ballyconneely) as well as a really challenging and beautiful Connemara Isles 9 hole course where you will play from one island to another and yet another!
We have some club sets and shoes we are happy to lend to you. We also have a few bicycles & helmets if you fancy taking them out too. We’re happy to advise on day trips and excursions further afield if you fancy an adventure.
