Tucked into the fellside on the “barbarian” side of Hadrian’s Wall on a Northumbrian hill farm, this stone cottage is a unique, self-catering hideaway for up to four people. It offers spectacular views, complete privacy and utter seclusion.

Cosy and romantic, accessed via its own private gravel road across the fields, the Bothy is within easy walking distance of the dramatic central section of Hadrian’s Wall.

The off grid and isolated nature of the Bothy wont suite everyone!

The space
Coronavirus - at the Bothy unless you choose to you wont have to interact with anyone at all during your stay....the isolated nature of the Bothy was always part of its charm, probably more so now than ever. Out of an abundance of caution we are keeping extra long gaps between sets of guests staying, during which the Bothy gets head to toe professionally cleaned. We are also ensuring guests have plenty of environmental friendly sanitiser and cleaning products available should they wish to avail of them during their stay.

It has two bedrooms - one with a double bed and the other with bunk beds (3ft wide) - for which bedding and bed linen is provided (for adults the bunks will be a bit of a squeeze). Between the two bedrooms is the shower room, with WC, basin and shower. This also houses the gas-fired combi-boiler, which provides instant hot water as well as heating the radiators that feature throughout.

To one end of the living room is a galley kitchen equipped with wall and floor units, gas cooker, microwave, sink and fridge with ice compartment. While the kitchen is equipped with all the essential utensils for cooking and eating, due to the low-energy nature of Eastbanks Eco-Bothy, there is no dishwasher, washing machine or freezer.

The living room itself has a dining table and four chairs, easy chairs and sofa. It also has wall-mounted DVD player and a wood-burning stove. All wood is provided.

The main feature of the living room is the window that takes up most of the gable end, giving spectacular views to the east (see photo).
There are also French windows with steps leading down to the outside of the bothy.

The front door leads straight onto the fellside. Outside the door is a woodstore, well-stocked with dry wood for the burner. There is also a picnic table/bench set and washing line. A short distance away is the generator and a shed housing the PV cells and renewable energy batteries. A fenced-off car park, meanwhile, keeps curious livestock away from cars.

Guest access
The whole property is yours!

Other things to note
This property is off grid. There is no mobile phone signal inside the bothy, but some networks can be obtained by walking 20ft or so up the fell. There is no internet access either, although there is an internet cafe with Wifi at the Twice Brewed Inn two miles away

The electricity is provided by a small wind turbine, located 100 yards away, and photovoltaic panels mounted on the south-facing roof of the battery shed, 20 yards from the bothy. These two sources of renewable energy feed into a large battery bank, which then provides normal domestic voltage electricity – via an inverter – to the bothy on demand, 24 hours a day. If the battery bank gets low, then a super-silenced generator near the shed automatically starts up for an hour or two, boosting the batteries, before shutting itself down again. In sunny, breezy conditions, with modest energy demand, the generator may not fire even once for a week or more. The electrical consumption of the bothy has been minimised though the use of low wattage lights and appliances. Typical power consumption during a 24 hour period is about a third of that consumed by a comparable on-grid property.

The boiler is one of the new breed of A plus-rated high efficiency models, running on bottled gas, with a room thermostat. The temperature is maintained at a comfortable level with minimal firing. Hot water for the shower and taps is heated as it is needed, thus avoiding the need to store hot water. The same bottled LPG gas also serves the gas cooker.

A wood burner allows you the luxury of an additional, directional heat source and flickering flames to relax in front of.

Water comes from a spring. It is collected in a tank and then pumped through a filter and UV disinfectant light tube. Its purity is monitored.

The Bothy has its own sewage treatment plant, utilizing a super–clean system designed in Germany (and the first of its type installed in Northumberland) which exceeds the UK’s environmental standards.

Cosy and romantic, accessed via its own private gravel road across the fields, the bothy is within easy walking distance of the dramatic central section of Hadrian’s Wall and associated attractions. It is also close to Greenlee Lough National Nature Reserve and a network of public footpaths, permissive paths, cycle routes and open access land. At Eastbanks, you can literally step out of the door and just keep walking.

If you have ever wondered about living a low impact lifestyle with renewable energy, the bothy will give you a taste of the experience.

If you leave the door open, you may find yourself sharing the place with grateful sheep.

There are no outside lights – and officially, Northumberland has the darkest night skies in England.

Local 'nightlife' means badgers and barn owls - though there is a pub serving good food two miles away.

Early 30’s - easy going, usually touring around Scotland on a motorbike. More often than not I’ll be staying somewhere for a bed and hot water, and be out and about the rest of the time.
