Birken House is located above a home based bakery in the grounds of a 110-year old farmhouse, and is rumoured to be the location of an original stagecoach stop on the Douglas Trail. The suite is south facing, with tasteful decor and big folding doors opening on to an awesome view . It's rustic but contemporary; airy in summer and cosy in winter. It’s 30 minutes north of Pemberton, and is a great base from which to explore Birkenhead Provincial Park and Joffre, Gates and Anderson Lakes

The space
While the suite is in a new building, we've incorporated materials and features of an old barn that was on the site to give it lots of character. The suite is large, airy and barn-like, with lots of salvaged wood, and is finished to a high standard. It has large south facing doors that open onto a balcony with a wonderful view over farmland, trees and mountains.

Guest access
You'll have access to the entire suite, which is self-contained and quite private, with its own separate access. There is a great exterior deck with a screened dining area, barbecue snd a propane fire pit. You are also welcome to explore the rest of the 5 acre property.

Other things to note
The suite is above a home based bakery business. While this means you'll never be short of bread or a pie while you're here, bakeries sometimes run late and start early! We will make every effort to be as quiet as possible, but we start early on Farmers' market days. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning are our busiest times. You may hear us lighting the wood fired oven, but you may also get to wake up to the smell of fresh bread!
The suite has a full kitchen and we are happy to provide bread, homemade granola and eggs (from the farm next door). Just let us know what you'd like when you contact us.
Please note that in our area dogs are more or less essential to protect crops and livestock from deer and other predators. Due to the presence of dogs on our own and adjacent properties we are unable to host children under the age of 12.

Birken is a great area as it is rural, but provides reasonably easy access to Pemberton (30 mins) and Whistler (50 mins). Its a good base for hikers, mountain-bikers (we can provide secure storage for your bikes) or those who just want to get away from the city and experience rural BC.

I'm a city Architect turned rural baker who gave up the urban lifestyle to move to the country. I'm a transplant from Ireland, and passionate about bread, baking and building community. I love where I live and like to share it with others.

During your stay
We live in the original farmhouse on the property. We are sociable and love meeting new people and hearing their story. However, we also respect your desire for space and privacy when you stay with us. We will not come and knock on the door, but will communicate through text/message. That being said please feel free to knock on our door at anytime with any questions you may have, if you run out of anything or if we haven't provided something you need. You can also call in at the bakery if we're working there.
