I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place. If you voted for Donald Trump, this place may not be for you. Thanks for understanding.

The space

A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.

Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, & a balcony with a table. The 2 bedrooms are separated by a hallway, but not a door. In the large, main room you'll find a queen sleigh bed. In the smaller room there is a queen bed & a double bed.

The stairs leading to up to the space are quite steep & might not be appropriate for some elderly or health-compromised folks.

There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.

Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.

Guest access

Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.

Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)

Interaction with guests

With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.

Other things to note

Suitable for events & retreats.

You can make a bonfire in the yard.

Self-service morning coffee is included, & sometimes bread & eggs for fixing your own breakfast.

Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.

I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.

A truly special place. We could have easily spent a few days at The Creamery and still have felt like there were more nooks and crannies to explore, fascinating books to flip through, and pieces of history to discover. Nathaniel has put a lot of care into creating a relaxing and intriguing place for his guests. Beds were clean and comfy, and we immediately felt right at home. He even made us a delicious dinner after our long day of driving! I cannot say enough good things about our stay - we truly hope to come back one day.

Nathaniel was an excellent, interesting and welcoming host. The creamery has so much charm and history. The town of Fertile, IA is truly quaint and picturesque. My fiancé and I truly enjoyed our stay and the great company.

The Old Creamery was amazing! We had a fantastic stay there. Nathaniel was a terrific host and the space he has created was so unique, comfortable, and interesting. The entire upstairs is the guest quarters, and includes two separate rooms plus a variety of nooks and crannies. The wicker sleigh bed was elegant and comfortable, and through the open window we could hear and see the Winnebago River (which is in the backyard). The second bedroom has a door that opens onto a pleasant little roof deck with chairs. The entire house has lots of wonderful bookcases full of books, interesting art, and cool architectural details that Nathaniel has added in his restoration/renovation. I especially enjoyed the cactus sink and reading nook. There's a bench down by the river for relaxing, and a historical park across the street. The two friendly cats were a nice bonus!

This is the most memorable AirBnB I have ever stayed in. I could have spent weeks in Nathaniel's place exploring the extensive collections of books and curious items. Sad we only got to spend one day, but so happy with our experience we have already decided to return!

Always a wonderful escape from our daily lives! We love driving up here for a few days for some R&R that resets us before we return home! Every room has a unique feeling, yet each is cozy and welcoming! Mink is a fantastic addition! Our newest adventure is Cafe Mir, which we walked to on Saturday night for amazing tomatoes and pizzas like we had in Italy!
