About this listing

I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place. If you voted for Donald Trump, this place may not be for you. Thanks for understanding.

The space

A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.

Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, & a balcony with a table. The 2 bedrooms are separated by a hallway, but not a door. In the large, main room you'll find a queen sleigh bed. In the smaller room there is a queen bed & a double bed.

The stairs leading to up to the space are quite steep & might not be appropriate for some elderly or health-compromised folks.

There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.

Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.

Guest access

Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.

Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)

Interaction with guests

With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.

Other things to note

Suitable for events & retreats.

You can make a bonfire in the yard.

Self-service morning coffee is included, & sometimes bread & eggs for fixing your own breakfast.

Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.

I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.

This is a very quaint, quiet AirB&B experience! Very neat building with a very eclectic collection of antiques and books. Nathaniel has done an amazing job renovating the upstairs, creating a very relaxing, comfortable place to stay. Our family of five had more than enough space. Definitely worth the nightly rate!!

As a person who has lived in a major city for the past six years, I had forgotten places like this existed. This creamery is absolutely gorgeous and unlike any airbnb I have stayed at. It's a beautiful rustic space with modern day amenities. Books and instruments can be found nearly everywhere. Also, Nathaniel was an excellent host and very communicative. I can't recommend this place enough. As an aside - this space is truly in the countryside; if you have allergies to pollen, staying here may be a challenge. But in my opinion, it's worth it.

Nathaniel is a great host, and the old creamery is comfortable and very clean! The beds are comfortable (except the futon, which we had to use because we had an extra person). The house is unique and reflects the talent and interests of our host. Nathaniel let us use the kitchen, which allowed us to eat our meals at "home" for the most part. His backyard is lovely, right next to the river. We stayed 2 nights in the mid-week of RAGBRAI, and it was a highlight of our week.

The Old Creamery is spacious and in a lovely setting. We would have enjoyed staying longer, but RAGBRAI called, so we arrived late and left early the next day.

This place is very easy to find, just off the interstate a few miles, nestled in a small-town environment. The outside is rustic, but inside is spacious and very livable. We especially enjoyed the large open spaces and interesting antiques and musical instruments in the lower level. Definitely a place to stay again sometime!

This place is a GEM. The creamery is in the town proper with neighbors but it feels really secluded. You can hear the river in the back yard and sit near it and watch the lightning bugs at night. Huge collection of artful movies and records. Strange antiques. Great cat. It's gorgeous. Near Clear Lake where we took a ferry ride then went for dinner at Fieldhouse (Nathanial's cousin's restaurant). Great area and really nice people. Nathanial was an excellent communicator and though we didn't get to meet him we felt really comfortable in the creamery. Highly recommend to creative people for a weekend trip from Minneapolis area.

This place is amazing - a real gem! We're already thinking about how we can drive back through Iowa just to stay here again.
