Hidden, deep, deep within the Northumberland Hills, in the middle of a forest, accessible only by foot lives a Hermit. Just a few times a year he invites the outside world in!

A collection of tents, chic cabin. Yurts and tree houses to come, nestled along a forested ridge; with views of the shire-like rolling countryside of Northumberland to the east, and overlooking an old growth wooded ravine to the west.

The space
If you were ever captivated by the ewok village in the starwars movie, then this is the place for you! One of Ontario's most exclusive resort settings.

It's a place of quiet reflection, and caters to engage you with nature and each other. It is less of a resort, or even a destination as it is an experience!

All amenities are off grid, and include spectacular hammock areas for reading, a zen garden, tree-houses, hiking trails, solar power and outhouses. All accommodations are named after a notable philosopher and come supplied with accompanying literature and other great reads. Out door nature shower and BBQ is on premise.

The Hermitage attracts world class business leaders and musicians, artists of all walks of life as well as international travelers. It's not uncommon to see leading thinkers or intellectuals walking through the property smoking a pipe and enjoying the butterflies, beautiful tree species and sweeping landscapes of the surrounding area; or having a fascinating, inspiring conversation with one of our guests.

It's all about #data detox for our visitors; connecting them with other interesting people, engaging them with the forest and nature, and using philosophy to help them think about their lives and their relationships and what really matters. It's a place where people meet, ideas are formed...a place where you find and realize again the creativity that lies within us all.

Ask us about our personal development days and business summit courses.

***Special Note*** Due to the remoteness of this property, guests will need to contact the hermit/host at time of booking and MUST call/contact the hermit 30 minutes prior to arrival, as he will have to guide you through trails to this forested location from the edge of the property. There is a fridge, bbq and outdoor sink/kitchen on premise and guests are more than willing to bring food. If guests wish to leave the property later on in the evenings for dinner in town and will be arriving back late; a flashlight will be required and supplied by the Hermitage. It is suggested to make use of the magic and hospitality of the Hermit who typically builds a campfire for guests and prepares meals/snacks at no charge. Hey the hermit gets lonely sometimes too! If you wish total privacy across all 50 acres of this forest sanctuary that is perfectly fine as well and the hermit/host can be on call after orientation.

The Hermitage stages one yearly event each fall. 2018's event will be a string orchestra in the forest. (Date: TBA)

**Guests come to the Hermitage first and foremost to be in the middle of a forest preserve. It is suggested to pack light for your journey to this wooded hillside location.

I got burned out with the corporate world in Toronto and decided to build my own Hermitage to get out of the city; along the same lines as many forested hillside hermitages that i visited in Japan while living there. I've always had a fascination with treehouses since i was a child. I love walking through the woods and getting people out to the forest. Interesting facts: I ran coast to coast across Canada in 1998 as a type one diabetic, raising money for diabetes research. I absolutely love: -to travel the globe -philosophy -the forest -architecture I am really excited to meet many interesting guests and share the magic of my forest sanctuary. The Hermitage & Shire is a passion project for me from beginning to end. The design and architecture of all accommodations are very important as is preserving the forest. The plan is to augment this old growth forest with authentic experiences like philosophy workshops and forest bathing. The Hermitage stages one yearly event each fall. Last years event was a Cello and string orchestra in a forest grove on the property!!!
