Well preserved French Villa in a quiet alley in the absolute centre of Hanoi. In fact, no visit to Hanoi should miss a walk around the French Quarter aside of course from Hanoi's own famous Old Quarter.
A 15mins walk will take you to Hoan Kiem Lake, Old Quarter or Lenin Park. Right next door is the French prison - Maison Central, also known as the "Hanoi Hilton".
Outside this short alley, you have an abundance of food, coffee shops and convenience stores.

The space
This apartment is one room in a big villa which belonged to a French governor. After 1945, French colonizer left the North of Vietnam. All French villas in Hanoi were divided to Vietnamese people who supported and worked for the Vietnam government.

Hà Nội, Vietnam

On October 1, 1888, the Kingdom in Hue signed an official agreement with French colonialists, from that day, Hanoi was a city under the French concession regime. The headquarter of the colonial government are based here include The Governor’s Office, the Supreme Court, the Secret Service of the Indochina Federation, the General of the French army in Indochina.

Since 1902, Hanoi has become the capital of the entire Indochina Federation. Hanoi is planned in the direction of a Western-style city. According to that plan, September 21, 1891, the Governor of Tonkin Beauchamp issued “Regulation of Hanoi construction” included specific and detailed provisions for balcony size of villas, a diameter of drainage pipes, doorsteps, billboards, etc…

A series of administrative buildings representing the power of the French in the land of Indochina has been built in Hanoi such as Governor - General, Long Bien bridge, the Court and Maison Central (which is just 2mins walk from this apartment); in which the court headquarters is considered a large architectural work at the time.

This villa is one of French masterpiece in Hanoi.
