Our family home is an immersion in retro, vintage and the unusual, created from recycled materials and quirky ideas. 5 min drive from stunningly beautiful, isolated, pristine surf beaches with amazing wildlife and world heritage littoral rainforest.

The space

Our backyard is available for you to pitch your tent or park your van under the mango tree and have use of the back deck and use of the outdoor bathroom, or we have our loft room available on our other listing, it's all possible, let us know what suits you. You can stay 1, 2 or 3 nights, 3 nights is our maximum stay.
Our home is an ongoing work in progress. We've been remodelling and styling it for 16 years now. We're passionate about living a sustainable lifestyle and reducing consumerism. We try as much as possible not to buy new items and to reuse and recycle found treasures, our home reflects this ideal. We have solar hot water and solar electricity that feeds back into the grid so if you want to spend some time where you'll leave less of an environmental footprint and escape, relax and experience a slow lifestyle for a while or take some time to reflect and encourage your creativity then you'll probably love it.

Guest access

As this is our family home we ask guests to be respectful of our family life. We enjoy our communal spaces and the interactions that occur in these spaces and value the different dynamics experienced through sharing these spaces with guests. Limited access to the kitchen is available depending on family activities, we have a BBQ on the back deck which will be available. The outside bathroom is inclusive of shower, toilet, sink and hot and cold water. There is access to electricity from the back deck using an extension lead. We ask guests be mindful of water and electricity usage. Family bedrooms are not accessible to guests. As a family we enjoy an outdoor life and when at home enjoy playing and listening to music. We have guitars available for guests to share.

Interaction with guests

Our family of 2 adults and 2 kids will more than likely be at home most of the time. We are a family of travellers and enjoy home exchanging as well so we are always happy to meet new people and enjoy sharing stories, our home, lifestyle and stunning environment.
Alan speaks French fluently and the rest of us are learning so we particularly welcome the opportunity to speak French with any guests.

Other things to note

We have enjoyed 9 home exchanges as a family in France, Spain, Sydney and Melbourne. We have previously lived in the UK and France.

Deby and Alan are so lovely and welcoming. They made us feel at home. Their place is very sweet and thougfully filled with recyclables, and they do an amazing job at upcycling! Lush green backyard, and an amazing outdoor shower :) would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks for having us stay!

We stayed at Iluka for one nights on our road trip from Brisbane to Sydney. Iluka is an absolute gem that combines beaches , the river and a lovely village. Deby is a great host and the only thing we regret that we cold not stay longer. Her house is a comfortable and comfortable and I strongly recommend it to other guests . We definitely are coming back!

We only stayed for one night and made use of the backyard camping spot. Deby and Alan were wonderful hosts, made us feel at home from start to finish. Iluka is a quiet spot which is exactly what we wanted. We enjoyed sitting around the fire in the evening and the outdoor shower and bathroom was a nice touch in comparison to the busy toilet blocks of other camping facilities. Highly recommend staying with this family. Hope to come visit again :)

My girlfriend and I only camped out in their backyard for one night but they were very welcoming and accommodating from the moment we arrived. Their home, although old (100+ years!) is very unique and has lots of character to it (e.g. huge mango tree, fire pit, large bbq, wood fire oven). There was a separate shower and toilet outside for us to use which was unexpected. Their back deck is quite large with plenty of chairs and table space to use. The kitchen is well-equipped if you want/need to use to cook a nice meal. They were very hospitable, offering us food & drinks all while exercising a open-door policy, enabling us access to the whole house and allowing us to come and go as we pleased. Their location in Ilkuka is a hidden gem, with beaches, forests, nature reserves, and campsites within a 10 min drive to explore.

The backyard of Deby and Alan is a very unique place to camp and avoid the crowds in the caravan parks. Their century old home is so pretty and it is really nice to sit and enjoy a meal on their superb deck. It is especially convenient when it rains, or to enjoy the shade of the magnificent mango tree when the sun is too hard. The amenities are quite unique, with a very nicely decorated outside shower. Deby and Alan invited us to share a breakfast in their home and it has been really nice to have a longer chat together. I would love to come again for a longer period of time, the beaches and national park nearby are stunning.
