Where you’ll be

Samoëns, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

The village centre with its shops and restaurants / bars is a 10 minute easy, level walk.

The nearest small grocery shop is Sherpa, opposite the cinema (a 15 minute walk).

In our view, the best bakery is Tiffanie which is in the village centre and also opposite the GME. There are other shops in Morillon and Sixt, if you find yourself there.

Le Pied de Poule, a few minutes' walk into the village, is a quality butcher, delicatessen and cheesemonger and sells other lovely goodies, too!

There is a large Carrefour Market supermarket on the other side of the village on the Verchaix road (D907)

The local weekly market is held on a Wednesday morning in the car park opposite the Tourist Office.

M. Bocquet sells good quality fruit and vegetables all week at his stall in the market place (predominantly in summer).

Winter:
The ski bus to the GME (a 10 minute ride) is within a few minutes' walk. Ski passes can be purchased at the GME cashdesks.

The ski de fond (cross-country ski) pistes are a 10 minute walk away in Les Vallons (cross-country ski passes are available from the Tourist Office).

Snowshoeing trails are plentiful, including to several refuges and mountain restaurants.

There is an ice rink next to the car park where the weekly market is held (opposite the Tourist Office).

Summer:
The surrounding area is a magnet for road cyclists, hosting the Critérium du Dauphiné in June as well as, on several occasions, the prestigious Tour de France in July. The legendary cols of the Joux-Plane, Ramaz, Colombière, Aravis and others are on our doorstep, as well as some interesting routes in the Vallee Verte towards Switzerland.

MTB tracks along the river Giffre are a short ride away and the GME and other lifts are adapted to carry MTBs (lift passes are available from the GME cashdesks).

At the Lac aux Dames on the other side of the village (a 25 minute walk or 15 minute bike ride), there is a sports centre with tennis courts, a children's play area, an outdoor swimming pool and other sports facilities (including a paragliding school), as well as a snack bar and a bar/restaurant.

Other available activities include whitewater rafting, via ferrata and climbing.

We have lived in this beautiful part of France since 2004. Hamish is Scottish and was a farmer in the UK. He is now a French-qualified plumber. Jane retired as an English and Scottish solicitor in 2016 and is now an English language teacher. We are both enthusiastic about outdoor pursuits, including hiking, all kinds of skiing, snowshoeing, road cycling and mountain-biking, so feel free to ask us any questions about the area.
