A light-filled guesthouse on a smallholding nestled next to the Mississippi river, but only a 20 minute bike-ride to the French Quarter! Wake up to the sound of our flock of chickens, watch the ships sail past the end of the garden, and take in the sunset over the river. Enjoy the peace and serenity of the historic Holy Cross neighborhood in the Lower Ninth Ward -- New Orleans' best-kept secret. We are a stone's throw from the river levee, with the best walks and views for miles.

Location

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Holy Cross is a quiet, historic neighborhood that is 3/4 of a mile from the super-hip Bywater. It is historically a mixed-income and racially diverse neighborhood. You can walk to the Bywater easily from our house -- by following the river and taking the bridge over the canal. Easy also to bike, drive or get the bus. We have a list of recommended eating / drinking / hanging out in Bywater that we give to guests.

But the best thing about where we are is the river -- there is nowhere else in New Orleans with this easy, unconfined access to the banks of the Mississippi. We are a few hundred yards from the water -- at the corner of the Mississippi River and the Industrial Canal. Ships sail right by us and river boats go in and out of the canal all day. We love to take a drink at sunset and sit on the benches by the river, or walk with our tea in the morning as the sun comes up. It is so special!

There is one cafe within walking distance and some serious dive bars. A mile down river, in Old Arabi, is an antique shop, a classic bar (Whiskey Bayou) a coffee shop, a great restaurant (The Kitchen Table) that our next door neighbors own and operate, a grocery store, and a couple of art galleries and interesting community spaces.

Don't come here if you want to be in the thick of things, but if you like fresh air and you want a magical base to explore the cooler side of New Orleans, you'll love it!

My husband and our two daughters live in New Orleans. He's from Mississippi, I'm from England. We love where we live and are lucky to have jobs we love too. We have been Air BnB hosts since 2014 -- using our space for friends and our large families when they visit, but renting it to visitors when it is free. We really enjoy hosting.
