Josh and Jana were excellent hosts! Josh set up a taxi for us from the airport in Belize City to the water taxi, and then met us once we arrived on the island. He made sure we were settled in and answered all of our random questions before leaving us. The house itself was perfect for my best friend's and I Spring Break getaway. It is simplistic, but well kept and very nice. Having hot water was also a major bonus as we learned that a lot of the accommodations on the island do not. The house is located within walking distance of downtown, but far enough away to give you that little extra breathing room. The house also came with the use of two bikes which made getting around even easier. I would definitely stay here again.

Joshua was a fantastic host! He planned our taxis perfectly and met us at the dock when we arrived. He was friendly and had great tips for our stay! The house was farther than we expected but they provide bikes which was perfect and it was away from all the noise from the town. The house itself was clean and enough space for the two of us. We did spend our days exploring and really only came back to sleep (definitely explore while you're there!) we would have to sleep with two fans at night because it got so hot but other than that it was welcoming and fun! Thank you Joshua for your hospitality !

The Roughrider is exactly as described...Rough. We requested detailed directions but Joshua offered to pick us up at the Water Taxi. Basically what he meant was, I'll call a taxi for you and you can pay for it. That cost us $5. The house is a cute first floor, 3 room unit. The kitchen was solid but...We cook our meals to eat well and save money and the cookware was atrocious. All the non-stick pans had been scratched to hell and except for one of them were un-useable. Try cooking all your meals for 5 days with one pan. The water pump for the 5 Gal jug was broken too (I see from a past review he was aware of it... it's still broken). Sleeping arrangements were terrible and the cheap bodega recovered inner spring mattress was lumpy, creaky and miserable. There were cigarette burns on the cover and stains. We found out because the sheets didn't fit and fell off every night. Gross! We slept terribly the whole time. The neighborhood is far from everything and super noisy. There's a school across the street and first bell is at 7:45am. Then there's the neighbor yelling at his kids and cutting wood from 7am to 10pm every day. The local roosters begin crowing at 4am too. The adjacent airport didn't bother us because we were wide away by the time planes roared overhead. The house is infested with sand flies or Noseeums. We were bit mercilessly. Josh was bit too which I should have taken as a hint. My girlfriend had over 300 bites after the first night. The sandy yard seems to be a breeding ground for them and this part of the island is where the mangroves are. Due to the bugs we slept in a wind tunnel at night trying to keep them at bay. It didn't work. The lighting in the unit consisted of low wattage twist bulbs. It was like hanging out in a bug zapper. The location is far from the action. Therefore bikes are a must. The bikes provided were trashed and didn't work. Joshua hooked us up with a great repair guy and we paid to get them fixed- $20. Later I talked with the owner who seemed to know they were broken. Really!!! When the chain falls off you have no brakes. That's not cool and lame that you would provide a broken bikes you knew was sub-par and dangerous. Speaking of dangerous... the shower is super slippery and there are signs that clearly warn you. Make sure to avoid the razor sharp bent drain cover. It could ruin your trip. Josh gives you the boot at 10am on the departure day. We were more than happy to leave at this early hour to escape RR. If you're looking for a place to crash and don't care about creature comforts this place is great. I don't expect the owner to make any significant changes. Stay here at your own risk.

In general, the place was good. It is definitely a place that you leave in the morning and come back late to sleep. The location is not near food and entertainment nor does it have a place to relax and enjoy the view. We were totally okay with that. You can find cheaper places on the island but I can't vouch for the space and quality though. This place has great space and Good sized bathroom and bikes! They were so fun! The property managers are quite organised and friendly as well.

This was a great place. Jana came and met us when the water taxi dropped us off and then gave us the lay of the land. The Rough rider inn was really great too. Plus it came with bikes! Had a blast and would definitely recommend this place!

Caye Caulker Destinations User Profile

Caye Caulker Destinations was created in 2014. We have chosen to represent only a handful of homes, so that we are able to to give you excellent service and take care of you as you enjoy our GO SLOW island!

We hope you will love the slow pace, the casualness and the off the beaten track feel here. Our island is not meant for people looking to insulate themselves in high end resorts. This is a small community with a strong tourist draw to vacation in a place with a simpler way of life. Come and enjoy and unwind.
