Relax and make yourself at home. Enjoy this view from anywhere in the house. Here's a large pod of Orcas that visited our shore in June 2015. We've seen more Orcas this year than ever before.

Right on the beach. About 90 minutes from Seattle to our waterfront house on Herron Island, a tiny, private island in south Puget Sound. Sleeps 8. Majestic view. Deck, kayaks, paddle boards. Deer, seal, eagles and whales. Amazing sunrises!

The space

Herron Island is a small and secluded private Island in southern Puget Sound. A short 10 minute ferry ride separates you from all the stress and distractions of the mainland. You can only access the island by our 10 car ferry. There are no stores or restaurants on the island so you'll experience a level of peace and quiet that is hard to match anywhere else.

There are 2 bedrooms plus a large sleeping loft. The master bedroom has a cozy queen size bed and a stunning view of the water. The second bedroom has a comfortable queen bed. There is a sleeping loft with 4 single beds. There's plenty of room for 2 families with 2 kids each to relax and be comfortable. The open living/dining/kitchen area is a great place to congregate, prepare meals and enjoy time together. The spacious kitchen is fully equipped. The kitchen bar sits 4 and the dining room table sits 4 more.

There are 2 decks with spectacular views of the Puget Sound year round. Sunrises are nothing short of spectacular. Watching the moonlight reflect off of the water at night is one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see. Take in view from the deck or just stay in bed and enjoy from the bedroom window.

A large gas grill, Adirondack chairs and a propane fire table on the upper deck are are available year round. During summer and spring there is a complete set of upholstered patio furniture (table, chairs and umbrella). The lower deck is a great place to slip off to for a little seclusion. Any meal enjoyed on the deck will be one you will remember forever.

There is a TV, VHS player and a large library of vintage VHS tapes. There is no cable TV or internet but most people can get some cell coverage and internet via their mobile phones. We considered adding cable TV and internet but found our guests really enjoyed getting "unplugged". If needed there are several areas close by on the island where cell signals are strong.

Guest access

A short walk down the stairs brings you to your own beach. You’ll find 2 kayaks, 2 stand up paddle boards and life jackets at your disposal at no additional cost. The water in Case Inlet is exceptionally calm. Most mornings the water is like glass. An early morning paddle is a fantastic way to start your day. Whether you bundle up in the winter or put on your flip flops in the summer, a walk around the island on the beach is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of the Puget Sound. You can circle the island in under 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Expect to encounter a variety of Northwest wildlife including seals, otter, eagles, heron, deer and porpoise. If you're lucky you'll see the Orca and Humpback whales that have been visiting the island in ever increasing numbers. The west shore is the best place find whales although they've been seen all around the island. Listen for them spouting. Watch for them fairly close to shore. The water is fairly warm in the summer and excellent for swimming and floating. The calm waters make for some of the best paddle sports, water skiing and tubing you’ll find anywhere. After you play at the beach you can rinse away the salt and sand with a fresh water rinse at our beach shed.

Interaction with guests

You will have the house, grounds, beach, kayaks, and paddle boards all to yourselves. Our hostess, who lives on the island, will stop by shortly after you arrive to make sure you get in OK. She'll be available most of the time if you need anything while you’re on the island.

Other things to note

Tap water is fine for drinking. We supply all towels, linen, soap and paper products. Kitchen is fully equipped. We supply propane for the grill and fire table. There is a house manual with complete information in the house.

You are welcome to use our kayaks and paddle boards. We have plenty of life jackets in a wide array of sizes. If you have kids under 6 years you'll need to bring your own. There is no lifeguard on the beach.

Cell/internet service spotty in the vicinity of the beach house. We get best reception on the deck and at the top of the driveway. If needed there are several areas on the island where cell/internet signals are strong.

Donn's place is the perfect place to get away from the normal day-to-day hustle and bustle. The views from both decks are amazing and great for taking pictures at sunrise and sunset. Donn was always very quick and getting back to us with any questions and directions to the house, how to get in, etc were fantastic. There is a nice book about Herron Island which was very interesting and a detailed map of the island which we used to go to the beach on the sound end. It was a great place to walk along the water and take some more pictures. The MBR bed was super comfortable was were the blanket and comforter. I normally do not like light coming through windows in the morning because I am a very light sleeper and any light or sound wakes me up but here I loved lying in bed looking at the view, even early in the morning. Donn also has a ton of VHS movies to choose from so for the few times we did want to watch something we had no problem finding something to watch. We had planned on using the kayaks and SUPs but the water was pretty cold and we're novices on both so decided not to try those out this time. The few things I would share for anyone else staying there are: * In the house information you receive, if it states there is a fire pit and you need to bring firewood, there is now a gas fire pit so no need to stop and get firewood. * The kitchen is stocked with just about any kind of pot, pan, utensil you could need, including a steamer pot which we put to good use with crabs we brought with us. Yum! As mentioned in the house information, the only kitchen staples provided are salt & pepper. I mention this because we have stayed in some places that don't mention olive oil, non-stick spray, butter etc but have had those things when we got there. Other than salt & pepper you do need to bring anything you may need/want to make your meals including aluminum foil (we did find parchment paper although we brought some with us). * You need to bring shampoo, conditioner and a hairdryer. The house manual does not say these things are provided so it is accurate. Again, I only mention it because you will often find those things even if not called out. We had shampoo & conditioner but did not bring a hair dryer. Not a big deal, especially for the days staying on the island, just took some adjusting on fixing my hair on the morning we left. * If you get to the ferry area going to the island and you are the first car there as we were, pull up along the right hand side of the road up by the little cabin station. We pulled into the gravel parking area on the left...

What a cool spot! From the moment we arrived to a deer chilling outside the front door, to the moment we left, it was a unique and memorable weekend.

A great place to stay. Wonderful views of the water and lots of wildlife ( a large buck came by on both days). The video library has something for everyone and was a great way to pass the time during a few brief rain showers. If you are looking for beautiful views of the water and some peace and quiet I totally recommend this place.

This is a magical spot in the pacific northwest. This home, overlooking (and with direct access to) the water is gorgeous! We enjoyed kayaking, SUPing, fishing, walking, and so much peace under the sun and the stars. This home is super comfy, and Donn was a fabulous host, and very accessible! We hope to return one day.

If you are looking for a quiet place to relax and unwind-this place comes highly recommended. The house is cozy and the view is amazing. We spent every day in the water on the kayaks and paddle boards. Watched the sunset in the evening and grilled our dinner on the amazing deck. Loved every minute!

My wife and I have lived in the Pacific Northwest most of our lives and raised our kids here as well. My wife loves to cook, is an avid reader, professional communicator and political "junky". I'm a musician and can bore you to tears rambling on about the completely irrelevant intricacies of my favorite music. We have loved traveling the world but find that as in The Wizard of Oz, there is truly no place like home! We discovered Herron Island in southern Puget Sound about 3 years ago and immediately fell in love with it. We were both amazed that such a beautiful place could exist so close to us without ever even knowing it was in our own backyard. We enjoy sharing our "secret" island with others. We have 2 homes there. We have a friend living there full time who is available to check in with you and assist with troubleshooting if needed.
We hope you will love Herron Island as much as we do- ENJOY!
