Location

Bawley Point, New South Wales, Australia

Bawley Point is known for its pristine beaches, its famous surf breaks, its National Parks and its Aboriginal & European Heritage.
Cook's first sighting of Australian Aboriginal people was on Racecourse (Koorbrua) Beach on 23 April 1770, the same date that he named Pigeon House Mountain. European settlement came to Bawley Point in the 1830's when access was only by sea. Much archaeological evidence of these times still remains for visitors to see.
The Murramarang Aboriginal Heritage Area contains the largest Aboriginal midden in the southern hemisphere & the nearby Swan Lagoon is home to a serpent in Aboriginal mythology. NP&WS walking trails & information signage are scattered through this area which is located on the Murramarang Headland adjoining Bangalay Retreat.
Murramarang House (private residence - no access) & The Gantry on Bawley Headland are the most notable remaining examples of European heritage.
Within walking distance of Bangalay Retreat, there are 12 beaches, all uninhabited most of the time, two within National Parks (Murramarang NP & Meroo NP) & many containing legendary surf breaks.
