Spacious room with private bath in the heart of picturesque Highland Park, NJ in an ideal location, convenient to all stores & restaurants. Within walking distance to Rutgers, NJ Transit train & buses- 1 hour ride to NYC, 40 min to Princeton.

The space

It is an unusually large and spacious room with a lovely bathroom and changing room adjacent to the bedroom. There is a pull-out sofa which has a queen sized bed in the room as well. The room has a ceiling fan and light with a remote control. There is a desk, a large closet, a small dresser and a small refrigerator in the room plus your own Keurig coffee maker!

Guest access

The apartment is located in a small town about a mile from the Rutgers campus. The town's small shops and restaurants are minutes from the apartment. For Jewish guests it is also within the eruv and within easy walking distance of 4 schuls.

Interaction with guests

Guests have a choice of eating out at one of the cafes or restaurants in the town or having breakfast here in the apartment for an extra cost. I live in the apartment but the entrance for the room is a few feet from the front door and quite private.

Other things to note

I have an outdoor/indoor cat who stays exclusively in my rooms when she's inside at night. She does not go into the guest room.
The apartment is on the second floor with a 19 stair walk -up.

I stayed with Debbie for a month, and her place was my home away from home. She was a fantastic host. I had all the privacy I needed and all the hospitality I could want. The room for rent is the master bedroom (with en suite bathroom and pantry) in a three-bedroom apartment; as advertised, it is both spacious and cozy! It is on the Southwest corner of the building, and gets great natural light. The entry is right inside the apartment. The bathroom is clean and the hot water HOT. I will miss the water pressure! The mini-fridge, microwave, and Keurig served me well. She also allowed me to use her laundry machines. I often worked from my room at a desk on quite speedy WiFi. There is also a GREAT little cafe right across the street (OQ Coffee) where I stayed caffeinated and got much work done. The neighborhood of Highland Park is lovely, and this apartment is right in the heart of it. Three blocks in either direction includes a range of restaurants (including Kosher and ethnic), bakeries, delis, diners, a 24-hour RiteAid, a Stop-and-Shop grocery store, and a Farmer's Market June-December. Donaldson Park is within walking/jogging distance (.4 miles), and has everything -- ball fields, courts, playgrounds, and an old-school fitness circuit around a 1-mile loop. Johnson Park is within jogging distance and follows the Raritan River as far as one wants to go. Two Rutgers campuses (Cook & College Ave) are about 1.5 miles away; I often commuted by bike to Cook , and walked a couple of times, too (not a scenic route, but practical). The train station is a little over a mile away, and I often walked there to take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line ($9, 40 minutes to Newark Airport, $14, ~1 hour to Penn Station in Manhattan). A few caveats: Debbie has a cat, Shayna; she is a sweetheart, but could cause allergies in some (I was fine). The apartment is on the second floor, and entry requires climbing a flight of stairs. The apartment is above a music school. During the day and evening piano and drums can be heard, but this never went into the night during my stay and never caused me any inconvenience. Although I have a high tolerance for beginning bongo players. Debbie keeps a relaxed kind of Kosher in her own kitchen, so cooking there was not an option. But she did share a great Shabbat dinner with me, and conversation was warm and interesting. On Sunday nights we've been watching Wolf Hall in her living room. I will definitely look into staying here when next I'm in the area!

A stayed about 4 months at Debbie's home and I had a very pleasant stay. Debbie was always friendly and willing to help. The neighborhood is great. A lot of options to eat. Walkable distance from train station to get to NYC and EWR.

We had an overall good stay at Deborahs house. She is a very nice, kind woman, and the house was located in a beautiful neighborhood with a great coffee shop across the street, and a 20 minute walk to Rutgers campus. Pros: -location -breakfast, tea, coffee, juice available for us -shampoo, conditioner, tissues, iron, hair dryer available -beautiful neighborhood Cons: -Bed was very uncomfortable. It's a pull out couch which can be inherently uncomfortable but this one was particularly uneven so my back hurt the next morning and I didn't sleep well -a bit stuffy due to the cat / carpet -It was a bit expensive for the value Other comments: There is a piano school downstairs which didn't bother me but it would be good to know if you have to stay in and work or need quiet. you can hear it very clearly in the apartment.

Response from Deborah:
So sorry you found the queen sized pull- out bed uncomfortable. I don't know what I can do about that. I never let the cat in that room so there is no cat odor on the carpet. I vacuumed before you arrive and try to keep it as clean as possible. The cat stays in my room or outside but is never allowed in the guest room. There is a fan on the ceiling so if you found it stuffy, you could have either opened the windows or turned on the fan. I'm very sorry you weren't pleased. Debbie
