If you like listening to parakeets and the occasional Motor boat putter by; watching fishermen on traditional boats all through the night from any one of three terraces; barbecuing fish you caught or bought at the local market then Iwura would be a great base to explore Negombo and environs.

The space

This is a beautiful garden cottage surrounded by fishermen in the real Negombo.

Staying here you can get a real sense of the pace of life in Sri Lanka and, if you're here when there's a festival, you can jump in or just watch the locals. Poya, the monthly celebration at full moon, is particularly lovely as you watch the moon rise over the lagoon.

Stay entirely alone or let the lovely Sri Lankan family take care of you whether you want them to water the garden daily or to act as a maid service. They can also teach you Sri Lankan dishes to eat on the "shack".

This is the real Sri Lanka but with internet and daily housekeeping if you want it.

We also have a generator and more plugs than you could imagine. So you will not be left without power

You are only 10 minutes by boat or 3-wheeler to a 5 star hotel with 100 meter swimming pool or the local beaches. You are about 20 minutes from the tourist part of town or 300 rupees. Or borrow one of our shopping bikes and explore the neighborhood. Our neighbors are nice and you might even visit the aquaculture project next door.

Guest access

With one large and one small double bedroom, both en suite, as well as a garden shower and WC you'll never be far from water even without the lagoon. You will have access to the whole property including the shack where you are welcome to eat food you have bought or cooked or had us cook for you. If you want yoga lessons or trips we can help with that too.

Interaction with guests

It's up to you. If you want to be left alone to enjoy the solitude, the view and the romance we can do that. If you want someone to tidy up, feed the dogs and birds and water the garden every day we can do that. We'll give you a mobile phone and the numbers of lots of people who work in the area and who you will help to make a living by staying here and using their local small business services. We in this case is more likely to be the family who look after the place than me. I'll be in Dubai.

Other things to note

We'll provide linens and a full kitchen. We also have a well stocked first aid kit but let us know if you need anything and we can probably help. Please check out our (website hidden) page and blog for more photos and videos. Look for iwura guesthouse on (website hidden) earth

This house has a fantastic view on the mangrove forests and the lagoon. Bikes and canoes are available. The neighbourhood is very quiet. The house is situated in south of the fish market, which is hardly touristic. Overall: a very special place!

We had beautiful time there. The house was clean and quiet, the dogs were very friendly and Rayenchi was a great host. He arranged us everything, airport pickup, dinner, full day sightseeing with a tuk tuk driver.. everything. It was perfect. Thank you.

Great location, and quiet area, good support from Raya, the person arranging the keys and airport pick up. Still easy to access the beach and restaurant via Tuk Tuk (10 minutes ride, 600 Rupees). Unfortunately, the house is not clean and needs a lot of maintenance and repairs, to be able to truly enjoy this fantastic location. To be honest, I would not return or recommend the place until these issues are fixed

We spent our last five days of our holidays in Iwura and it was perfect. Our two girls had big fun and felt very at home. The House is very generous and nice, the garden and its location is paradise. You have a beautiful view at the lagoon. The House is placed in a very authentic fishermen-district, nearly no other tourists. It was great to observe how they fishing prawns in a traditional way. We loved to spend our time on the Kanu, we found a nice spot to swim. Rayanchi his mother and his brother are very nice people! Rayanchi was always accessible and very helpful. His mother cooked twice for us dinner (best food in Sri Lanka) Thank you for this unique experience.

Dawns place is truly amazing. We felt we became part of the life of the lagoon. The house is very functional and has all the basics for cooking, relaxing and have great surroundings for a good holiday. A real asset to the place is Rayanchi . He was greeting us with a big smile as we met him in the airport and was available all the time for info, translation or what ever else we needed. We used him as a pick-up for our return to Colombo and was our day guide in Colombo. This made our day in Colombo easy as the suitcases were stored in the trunk without worrying about getting around. He's a careful driver and always respectful. His mother is a skilled cook and a sweet host. Dawn emailed us more than once to ensure that all was well. This also gave us an opportunity to ask questions and made us feel very welcome. The mobil phone made available is a genius idea! The listing is as described, even the dogs know how to react to strangers coming to stay. They mind what you say and give you a sense of security. We definitely recommend Iwura and would love to come back!

Iwura is paradise for anyone wanting an authentic taste of Sri Lankan living. The location couldn’t be more perfect: a rustic, peaceful property with a secluded feel, despite its close proximity to shops and beach. Rayanchi is the perfect host who kindly arranged everything we needed and his mother, Selena’s cooking is gourmet beyond any restaurant we found in Sri Lanka (Selena’s crab curry, sourced from the local fish market is a must!). We spent most of our time in enormous, comfy wicker chairs on the verandah reading books from Dawn’s extensive collection and started every morning with an excellent local teacher doing yoga in the pavilion at the edge of the water. Just 5 minutes from the property is Jetwing Lagoon- a 5 star hotel with an enormous pool and sun cabanas’ on the private beach….a great way to spend each sunset. Our visit was made all the more welcome by the two dogs, Elle and Dee, who became constant companions and were heartbreaking to leave.
