Rio de Janeiro: Cidade Maravilhosa

Few cities in the world have been blessed by as much natural beauty as Rio de Janeiro. Its name conjures images of white-sand beaches (37 in total), the Cristo Redentor, carnival, a football-game at Maracanã, samba or favela. Rio de Janeiro is a diverse city, from the 19th century hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa to the Americanized suburb of Barra da Tijuca. Though, most visitors tend to stick to the beach neighborhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema, with the near-mandatory excursions to Corcovado and Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).

Check In
  • Godi's flat in Copacobana was a great stay for me and my family. There were a total of 4 adults and 1 baby in our group and all of us felt that it was a convenient location, spacious enough and had good value for the 5 days. Only steps from the arcoverde metro stop and lots of great restaurants and bars nearby. About a 10min walk to the beach. This is one of the better parts of Copacobana, and you feel like you are in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Hint: if you want to go to see the Christ at Corcovado, skip the lines and buy tickets from the official van service from praco lido park (near the beach). Easy pick-up and certainly beats going directly to Cosmo Vehlo (waiting in line for the train) or even lago do machado (about a 10-15 min subway ride away).

Unlike from the photos, 1 of the rooms has a large double sized bed and the other room has two twins (single) beds, which can be placed one next to the other. A/c worked well but only was in bedrooms, for the living room, we used the fan and it was fine. Wifi worked very well, and was extremely fast. Took us a while to figure out the washing machine, but once we got the hang of it, worked fine. We didn't use the TV but it seemed great too. The kitchen was a bit spartan (as most are in RJ), but had a fridge, stove, coffeemaker and bread toaster. We made breakfast a couple of times and there were plenty of utensils and plates for all. Cons: no view from windows. Hot water in shower is gas operated so you have to light the pilot every-time. Not a big deal.

Godi is a great and very responsive host. Flexible and allowed us to stay over our pre-arranged booking when a last minute issue came up. Highly recommended!

  • Godi was a great host, as usual. This was my second time staying at his flat. That says it all. The flat was perfect size, perfectly appointed, and perfect location in Rio. It will be my Rio pied-à-terre as long as it is available. Two bedrooms on opposite sides of the living room, for privacy. Fully equipped kitchen. One block front he metro. Two blocks from the beach. Clean and comfortable. Flatscreen TV with loads of channels. Good internet connection. Highly recommended !!!!!

  • Not the greatest experience, a little overpriced for what it has to offer, a tiny kitchen and an unpleasant smell. The kitchen had limited pots and pans and the ones that were there were very small which made cooking for 4 very difficult. The oven also didn't work during our stay. The toilet next to the kitchen also kept leaking. The plus is its pretty close to the beach and the metro and Godi gave us information about the city and restaurants but if you are looking for a place that at least feels like home this is not where you want to stay especially for the price that Godi charges during carnival. We have stayed at apartments that fit our needs much better of times better for a third of the price. Godi also messaged me about the check in and check out times 5 different times even though it is clearly written in the confirmation of the place. It made us feel unwelcome and a bit annoyed. Parking was really hard to find near the place as well as there was no space in the parking lot underneath the building. This was especially more difficult as it was the carnival time. Hope this helps anyone else looking at this flat.

    Response from Godi Gutierrez:

I have had more than 100 guest bookings on this particular apartment; more than 60 positive reviews and 5-star ratings. I never had anyone complain in any of Luba's list of grievances - not one. It's quite clear to me that Luba just got so annoyed with my insistent emails and messages during the last 2 days of their stay.

But, the only reason I was insistent is because, she never answers my emails and messages - and it was imperative that I have confirmation that she got the message - which was, that she needs to abide by the agreed check-out time at 11:00AM - because another guest is checking-in that same day at 3:00PM, and that the cleaning lady will be at the apartment at exactly
11:00AM to prepare the flat for the next guest. And also, to inform her that she and her companions can leave their luggage with the doorman at the lobby (there are 2 storerooms there for this purpose). All I wanted is a confirmation that she did received this message.

Below, is my email and message to Luba -

*Hi Luba -Please, be reminded that the check-out time tomorrow, March 6th - is at 11:00 AM or earlier. I have a guest checking-in at 3:00 PM the same day - and the cleaning lady will be at the apartment at 11:00 AM to clean and prepare the apartment for thisguest. She needs a minimum of 4 hours to accomplish this.*

*If your flight out of Rio is later that 11:00 AM, you can leave your luggage with the security/doorman at the lobby - and just come back for it (email hidden)anks and cheers -Godi*

  • The location of the flat was great, not the most posh but safe neighbourhood and only a 5-min walk away from Copacabana beach and a 30 min walk away from Ipanema beach. Every taxi driver knows the location which is also very helpful.

The flat was very basic but clean and the shower produced hot water once we realised how to operate it. The air conditioning in the rooms worked very well, as did the wireless internet.

Godi was a great host, always responsive and came over to check the shower for us after we didn't get it to work. He also speaks fluent English which is surprisingly rare in Rio.

  • Awesome location, there is everything in the apartment for a good price. I recommend it.

    February 2014
  • Excellent location: 5 minutes walk to the Copa beach, 5 minutes walk to the subway/metro station, very good grocery shopping around. On Saturdays there is a farmer's market with good eggs and a choice of vegetables. Good and very good restaurants nearby. The apartment is bright, clean, quiet and comfortable enough, located on the second floor. Godi has thoughfully installed a converter for North American power outlets. Our flight was delayed; Godi patiently waited 5 hours to hand over the keys. The price represents excellent value. Highly recommended.

  • O apartamento era exatamente como descrito e o anfitrião é uma pessoa muito solícita e amável. Recomendo!

  • We had a great stay in Godi's apartment. The apt. was clean & very quiet. The bedrooms were comfortable & all the utilities worked well. The apt. was also conveniently located, surrounded by great restaurants and close to Copacabana beach. Thanks for a great stay, Godi. We had an enjoyable stay and hope to return to Rio soon.

  • Amazing location. Security day&night. Very comfortable apartment with a kind host. It gets a bit noisy in one of the rooms if the neighbors talk loud but silence is hard to find in Rio. I would definetely go back.

  • Great apartment and wonderful host. Great location. Located just 1/2 block from Cardeal Arcoverde metro stop makes travel downtown super easy and convenient. Easy access to Ipanema by foot or by bus. Just 2 blocks from the beachfront. Layout of apartment is excellent for sharing because the two bedrooms are separated by the living room. Apt was super clean and comfortable. Internet connection & cable TV never failed and were always on point. Not much of a view, but who worries out being inside looking out in Rio. The whole point of being in Copacabana is getting out onto the beach and into the streets. The upside: not being street side makes the apt really quiet. Decent food & shopping nearby, and the seafood restaurant right next door, "A Marisqueira" is definitely worth at least one visit. A great deal in every way! Godi is very friendly and welcoming. Can't imagine a better deal in Rio!
