RIGHT ON THE OCEAN, Villa Las Ballenas, between Samana and Las Galeras, has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a fabulous pool, and an open floor plan with several seating areas inside and out, including an ocean view gazebo and cooking area. Whale watch while eating breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The space

After entering the gated property, a long driveway lined with tropical flowers and fruit trees takes you to the caretaker's home. The housekeeper keeps fresh flower arrangements on the tables and guests are encouraged to help themselves to the papayas, bananas, limes, avocados, etc. Just past the caretaker's home, you spot the ocean and the beautiful Spanish style villa, which has been designed to make good use of the natural cooling affect of the ocean breeze. From the front door, you see through the villa to the swimming pool, and beyond to the ocean, gazebo and barbeque area.

There is an enormous master bedroom with an ocean view and large French doors which open to the pool. There are three more modestly sized bedrooms that share the two additional full baths and there are bunk beds in the master bedroom.

The large, well-equipped kitchen opens to a dining room with a table for 8. Just outside the dining room, near the pool, there is another table (with an umbrella) which seats 8 or more. Additional seating under the gazebo near the barbeque area also seats 8 or more. From the thatch roofed gazebo, you can watch whales, cruise ships, and fishing and sailboats. There is a spacious indoor living area adjacent to the dining room.

Guest access

Located on a large property, the villa has an enormous master bedroom and three additional bedrooms, a gourmet kitchen, fabulous pool, seating for large groups inside or out, ocean front gazebo and cooking area, WiFi, washing machine and a large, beautiful garden.

Interaction with guests

I am there on check-in to familiarize guests with the home and its amenities and am available 24/7 for questions, or to help you organize your stay.
Caretakers Geronimo and Nana live on the property, but far enough away that your privacy is maintained. They are available 24/7 to help you.

We had a great stay. Location is beautiful with the oceanwiew. The house comes with two lovely dogs, so its a must to be a dog lover. The dogs are keept in the yard at night but gladly hang out inside the house whenever they have the chance. The bbq area is a lovely spot by the cliffs, but for small kids very dangerous, as IF you fall down there is no way up. But the house and garden is sorrounded by a Wall so inside the garden all you have to be careful with is the pool. There is a local shop with just about everything in it and a modern gas station in just a 5 minutes walk. LAS Galeras is about 15 min drive with nice restaurants and a great beach. It is about 30 min drive to the lagret city Samana. Possible daytrips to Ziplining, el Limon waterfall, LAS Terrenas, National park Loa haities. The house is charming but a bit rough, it does not have the highest level of comfort and luxury, a few things are a bit worn. But the experience was great and it is such a magical spot. IF your lucky you can spot whales, We Did! The caretaker Jendry, who lives in a small house outside the property is super sweet and helpful, the cleaning girl did a great job. They dont speak much English though, so some spanish is helpful. Cynthia, the manager is american and very friendly. We had a great time.

Thanks so much for taking your time to review the villa and staff. Reviews are so important. We are all happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and that you explored the area while you were here. It's a beautiful part of the country. Having Salomon Market and Butcher Shop and the gas station within walking distance has certainly added to the convenience but thankfully the villa is well off the road so isn't impacted by noise, etc. The present owner of the villa has been making repairs and improvements since he purchased it (recently), and I appreciate hearing your comments about what we could do to make it more comfortable. I will forward your review to him so he can decide what next needs upgrading. By the way, Mancha and Raya love it when our guests are "dog people" and hate it when our guests aren't and we have to confine them. They'd love to see you again:)

We stayed in this house for 4 nights and 5 days and it was absolutely lovely. We loved the open air feel of the house and the nicely stocked kitchen were absolute highlights!!! Nana and Geronimo were very helpful. We arranged to have Nana prepare a traditional meal of beans/rice, stewed chicken and grilled fish for our meal the night of our arrival, and it was delicious. The ocean view is amazing and, although we did not get to use the pool, it was lovely and very clean. All in all, I would definitely recommend this property.

Our family of 7 really enjoyed staying here. The house is gorgeous and the view is unbeatable. To wake up and open the doors to your room and see the waves crashing over the cliffs is how every morning starts here. The rooms are very nicely spaced out so you feel like you have privacy from the rest of your party when you want it, which is very nice also. The house has almost everything you could possibly need. Geronimo, Nana and their beautiful daughter, Annaliese are the sweetest family ever and never hesitated to help with anything. Ask Nana to cook you a meal at least one night and you will not be disappointed :) There were a couple of things that could have been improved upon... One of the toilets stopped working our 1st day and dispite efforts to repair it a couple of days after we told them about it, it never did get fixed. There was also an issue with the water pump overflowing and turning one side of the house into a swamp outside, that no one seemed to care about. We finally figured out how to turn it off ourselves. All in all, this house was great and I would return again just to say hello to Geronimo and his sweet family :)

So glad you all enjoyed the villa and the caretakers. After reading your review, I was a little surprised. I thought I'd gone to great lengths to make sure your stay was good, from the first of our numerous messages to the last, even ordering, paying for and having three pizzas delivered one night on very short notice. I sent a man several times to try to figure out what was the problem with the toilet. He has since rebuilt it entirely. Though it would be ideal if I could answer every message sent to me via email within the half hour, it isn't possible. For one thing, Internet service in this part of the country can be a bit fickle at times. When you emailed about water somewhere, a message I didn't fully understand, I didn't get the email for hours! Of course I, and the owner, care if you have an issue that needs immediate attention. That is one of the reasons we have caretakers on site 24/7. So that they can try to deal with problems as they arise, or call me if they can't. I am reachable by telephone 24/7. Take care. Cindy

Cindy was very easy to work with and she was very helpful! She arranged our transportation to and from the airport, and also arranged a cook for us. She ways had a smile on her face and was very easy to communicate with! We appreciated everything she did for us and our family.

Thank you so much. It was a pleasure to meet all of you. Although there is a big, wide world waiting to be explored, it would be great to see all of you again one day.

My two children and I were looking for a long weekend of relaxation and reconnection, after a period of hard work and not a lot of family downtime. We found exactly what we were looking for at this property and thanks to Cindy's excellent hosting skills. She did a wonderful job of providing us with all that we needed, checking in on us twice after we had a (tiny and temporary) issue with the WiFi at the house, and then reading that what we needed was some quiet family time and graciously leaving us to ourselves. She was the perfect host - able to read our needs perfectly and act accordingly. An excellent experience all around!

So glad to know that you and the kids, and the pooch, "loved the peace and tranquility. The views. The sound of waves crashing. The coconut trees rustling." The owner has worked very hard to make the villa comfortable and inviting and will be very happy to know you enjoyed your stay so much. See you again soon?

We know there are a lot of choices for places to stay in the area, but isn't this a wonderful villa?! We're so glad you decided to stay, and I know you are, too. We hope to see you both again one day.

Cindy, really. No one calls me Cynthia.

My life motto, which seems to work MOST of the time: Que el viento se lleve tus problemas. (Let the wind take your troubles away.)

I'm fairly well-traveled and had never stayed in the same place for more than 2 or 3 days during any of my travels, though I was often gone from my northern California home for months at a time. Then, because I’ve always been drawn to “end of the road” places, I “ended up” in Las Galeras. I moved here a year later to try it out and never went “home”. I’ve explored most of the DR, but I’ve lived on the Samana Peninsula for almost 10 years and now know it quite well.

Though I have a full time job, the ocean, sun and coconut trees make me feel like I'm still on vacation. Sure, I miss some things about life in the good ole USA. Flying, live music (blues, bluegrass, alternative, jazz), backpacking, my fellow volunteers at Sonoma Land Trust, downhill skiing, high speed internet, wine tasting, second hand book stores, Home Depot, The Golden Gate Bridge, Sierra Club "dog hikes", and my granola-crunching, tree-hugging friends, but I love it here.

My Promise: If you come here as my guest, I promise to do whatever I can to make sure you have a great time. I want you to go home thinking that working, saving, planning, organizing and packing (passport, sunscreen, insect repellent, iPhone charger, swim suit, camera, flip flops, iPod, paperback book/s, umbrella).......and then hauling it all to the Dominican Republic and back was worth it. (And that maybe you’d even recommend it to a friend.)

Hope to see you soon.
