Built in 2018, our off-grid cedar cabin is tucked away in a mixed woodland on beautiful Manitoulin Island. It is uniquely decorated with antiques, thrift store finds and handicrafts collected from our travels around the world as far as Africa, Japan, Costa Rica and Canada’s Arctic. Our space is an inviting space to unwind, unplug and wake up to the sounds of the birds after enjoying the stars on a clear night.

The space
There is an outdoor solar shower is set among the cedars in a separate building a short walk from the cabin at the back of our property. Powered by the sun, guests can enjoy a warm shower in the forest. Fresh towels, soap, biodegradable shampoo and conditioner will be provided for guest use. Should you wish to bring your own amenities we ask that they are eco-friendly and biodegradable as the runoff goes directly into the ground.

We also have a basic outdoor kitchen next to the cabin set up with a Coleman stove where you can prepare and eat your meals. Plates, bowls, cups, silverware as well as a French Press available to make coffee will be available to guests in the outdoor kitchen. Cooking pots, pans and a kettle will also be available for guest use. And we request that both cooking and eating happen outside of the cedar cabin as food attracts unwanted visitors. Please note that we do not have a refrigerator or an oven. Your food can be stored in a ‘boxed in’ locked cooler - however you will need to provide your own ice to keep it cool.

The cedar cabin in the woods is powered by two solar panels. When the sun is shining and the panels are charging there is power. However on cloudy or rainy days when the power IS LIMITED we ask that you be mindful of what you plug in i.e. a cell phone or laptop charger etc. Unfortunately plugging in anything else (i.e. hair dryers and other accessories etc.) could draw too much power and could potentially drain or damage the batteries. It is also best to ‘plug in’ during the daytime so that the sun can recharge the batteries.

There is also campfire pit with wood outside of the cabin for guests to use and enjoy. We just ask that you don't leave the fire unattended and when you are finished that the fire is completely out. When summers are dry there can be island wide fire bans - if this is a concern we will let guests know.

My partner and I live off-grid in a cabin on Manitoulin Island. I am an artisan, naturalist and an adventurer. I love to travel and take road trips whenever I can. I first experienced AirBnb on a short trip to Chicago a few years ago. I really enjoy the concept of being able to travel places, meet new people while staying somewhere a little more personal than a hotel...

During your stay
We are around most days and also on weekends. We are also happy to offer you ideas about different points of interest and other events happening on Manitoulin Island. We do occasionally run workshops (i.e. pine needle baskets, the art of making fire by friction and wood burned bowls) in the evenings on our property around the main fire area as part of our business Flint+Flora. Guests attending these workshops will be asked to stay away from woodland cabin. However as guests, who are staying on our property you are also welcome to join these workshops should they be of interest to you.
