Indoor fireplace
This is one of a few places in the area that has this feature.
It's a special houseboat, modern designed with a lot of comfort. 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and floor heating (and wood stoves if you want). And as extra a sauna, trampoline and (an outside hottub; not always available)!

The space
The Jolie is one of the most special houseboats in the Netherlands!
It's a boat from 1930, but totally modernized to the modern needs like 2 bathrooms, sauna, hottub, open plan kitchen etcetera. Staying in the houseboat is an experience you will never forget. The proximity of the water, the folding doors to the terrace, the lighthouse-like wheeling house, open views to the surroundings, the children room with special children beds are some features of this houseboat. And Amsterdam is very nearby; a perfect starting point for a nice holiday!

Our houseboat is moored on a jetty together with a traditional ship, owned by our neighbours. The mooring is situated in Zaandam, a village next to Amsterdam. Amsterdam is easy accessable by train or car (15 minutes), but also Rotterdam (75 minutes) and Utrecht (45 minutes) and many more nice Dutch cities.

Amsterdam is the closest: you can visit the city center with all the charming canals, but we can also give you information for visiting beautiful musea such as Hermitage and Rijksmuseum, very nice restaurants and interesting architectural sites.

Zaandam itself is known for the 'Zaanse Schans': a preserved spot which shows the traditional Dutch landscape. It's nice to see, but the whole environment of the so-called 'Zaanstreek' is worth exploring by car or bike. Going a bit more north east there a the small villages of Monnickendam, Enkhuizen, Marken and many more. These are the former pitoresque 'Zuiderzee'-villages, that are not connected to sea anymore.

The sea on the westside of Holland is only 20-30 minutes by car. If you want to swim or rent a rowing boat you can go to 't Twiske (local recreational area), that is only 15 minutes by bike.

If you want to explore Holland and see typical Dutch landscape and cities in combination, our place is the best base camp. And not a normal base camp, but one that is also typical Dutch: floating on the water: a houseboat!

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOAT:
Our houseboat is renovated 8 years ago. In the past it had been a freightbarge (her last freight was in february 2010). We transformed it into a modern designed houseboat with a lot of space and view on the waterfront.

There is a big kitchen with stove, dishwasher, oven and microwave. This part of the ship is connected to a terrace on the boat. By opening up the folding doors, inside will be outside. With a small stairs you come into the large loft-like living area. Going towards the front of the ship there is a small room with a baby bed, the parents room with a lits-jumeaux, a washing room and a bath room with an extra toilet, large bath, large rainshower and sauna.

In the back of the ship there's the wheel-house with 2 lounge couches with a 360 round view, just like a lighthouse. Going down with a small stairs there is a small guest room with a double bed and two child bedrooms for 1 kids (normal beds), also usable for elder kids). This cab uses the small bathroom with extra toilet and rainshower on this side of the ship. This children's place is a heaven of children because of the dimensions and the nice and cosy places. All the friends of our daughter live it!

We have a terrace on the boat, but also one on the wooden jetty. There is also a shed and a small atelier. In summertime you can swim in the water next to the boat.

In short, it's a very special houseboat; a lot of people are coming to our home to see what's possible with the conversion of a barge. We also host a website about modern houseboat living. The houseboat is published in some magazines and newspapers in the Netherlands and the Danes made a documentary about our houseboat.

PRACTICAL
Parking is free in front of the boat.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is situated 25 minutes by car.
Easy by train, get off ZAANDAM, 5 min walk to boat.

We can accommodate 4 adults and 3 kids. We also have a baby bed and equipment.

SOME REACTIONS OF PREVIOUS GUESTS:
'Uns hat es sehr gut gefallen bei Euch! Simon hat es in der Schlafkoje geliebt! :-)
Poesie war auch total lieb und süß. Zaandam hat mir persönlich noch besser gefallen als Amsterdam und Loods 5 war der Hammer, da haben wir richtig zugeschlagen! ;-) ' (guests from Germany)

'Wij zijn gisterenavond laat gearriveerd, en alles is super! Het is een hele mooie boot, en mooi weer vandaag, dus we gaan ervan genieten. ' (guests from Belgium)

'Thanks for a great experience, it's really a great home you have... - and nice neighbors,' (guests from Danmark)

In september 2012 there was an article about the Jolie in one of the leading living magazines in Holland. It's a pity that we can't attach .pdf in the listing. If you want to see it, email me.

Guest access
Everything that's on our houseboat (we live there normally; when you come we are on holiday). There are also some bikes to use.

Other things to note
You can watch a danish TV program about our houseboat and our family (most of it English spoken) and have a look at the book My Cool Houseboat!

Location

Zaandam, North Holland, Netherlands

Zaandam is a suburb from Amsterdam. It's famous because of the Zaanse Schans (line of windmills). The city itself is big (100.000 inhabitants) enough to have all the necessary shops, restaurants, bars etc.. and Amsterdam is nearby!
