Empalme is small mountain town at 7,500 ft elevation in the cloud forest. The climate is cool and often rainy. This is a rustic traditional wooden cabin with a great warm wooden stove. The hosts are very friendly Costa Ricans that are willing to show a local rural experience in Spanish. This is also a perfect location for people wanting to relax and enjoy nature with wifi access or for people in transit to the southern part of the country.

The space
The wooden cabin is quiet and very private surrounded by mountains and trees. The clouds come and go beautifully. If you are not used to the rain forest the amount of rain that falls is incredible to witness and this is a wonderful place to enjoy this very unique experience. There are wooden floors throughout . There is a nice living room, but the kitchen next to the wood stove is the coziest place to be. The kitchen is fully equiped with pots, pans, dishes, silverware and basic staples like salt, sugar, baking powder and coffee. The kitchen sink is a traditional Costa Rican pila, a deep ceramic two sided sink that is lower than a standard style. There are three bed rooms, however one bedroom has the bathrooms attached and you must walk through it to get to the third bedroom which does not have any windows, so it is a nice quiet and dark room. So there are two completely private bedrooms, the other is in a more public space because of the access to the bathroom and the third bedroom. The bathroom is split - there is one door for the toilet and another for the shower with hot water. The sink is in the bedroom next to the bathroom doors. There is a very small front porch with a bench. In the yard there is a swing for kids to play on and lots of green space with flowers and plants.

The cabin is 2 km from the main interamerican highway. There are shops, restaurants, church, school and gas station in the center of town. It is a beautiful walk and about a 10 minute drive on a dirt road from the town to the cabin, it is easily accessible for standard cars (4 wheel drive is NOT needed). It is very peaceful and quiet. When the clouds clear and on most mornings there is a great view of Cartago, Volcan Irazu, Volcan Turrialba and San Jose from the road that leads to the cabin. There are a lot of moutains and trees around the property and on the road from the highway.

It is a very convenient location for exploring the area. It is a 30 minute drive to Cartago and a 30 minute drive to Santa Maria. There is hiking access to Parque Nacional Tapanti. There is very good and convenient public transportation. The buses between San Jose and San Isidro or Santa Maria is Musoc https://www.musoccr.com/. The buses between San Jose and San Isidro, San Vito, Golfito, Paso Canos is Tracopa https://www.tracopacr.com/. The buses between Cartago and Madreselva is Arguedas https://horariosgrupoarguedas.blogspot.com/p/grupo-empresarial-transportes-arguedas_5.html. The buses between San Jose and Puerto Jimenez is Grupo Blanco http://www.grupoblanco.cr/terminal-san-jose/.
