The Loft is a flat annexed to our beautiful stone barn conversion set in the spectacular Herefordshire countryside. Upstairs it has comfortable double and single bedrooms, separate shower room, kitchen/diner and sitting room, with views over Shobdon Forest. Downstairs there's an entrance hall, large wrap-around carpeted conservatory, plus a utility room with second loo. Ideally based for walking, local food, Hay Festival, the Black & White Trail and surrounding countryside.

The space
A lovingly converted Victorian Barn, The Loft gets its name from its historic function as a hay loft. Converted in 2000, The Loft is a modern and comfortable space.

On the ground floor there is a welcoming double porch area where we’ve provided mats for outdoor shoes and plenty of hanging space for coats following a country walk or exploration of one of our local towns and villages.

Just off from the ‘outer porch’ is a well-proportioned, double aspect conservatory offering a private space from which you can relax and enjoy views of the gardens. The conservatory is fitted with sun-blinds and heating for use in the winter months. A utility room – complete with washing machine, ironing facilities and a second loo – is located off from the ‘inner porch’ and completes the downstairs layout.

From the ‘inner porch’ you climb the carpeted stairs up to the main living area. The stairs open out into the living room, providing views across to Shobdon Forest – an area rich with walking options. In winter, a wool curtain can be drawn across the stairs, providing the ultimate cosy feeling for enjoying an evening in. Directly off from the living room is the well-equipped kitchen, including a dishwasher and Nespresso coffee machine complete with a selection of coffee pods. We provide eco-friendly dishwasher tablets and washing up materials for your stay. The kitchen is also home to a dining table suitable for three guests.

The Loft has two bedrooms. The single bedroom is bright and airy, with hanging and draw space. The double bedroom has built in hanging space as well as bedside tables with extra storage if needed. Both bedrooms have square windows with views across to the forest. There is also a newly renovated shower room. We provide 100% cotton bed linen, towels and luxury Noble Isle soap.

Set within four acres of landscape gardens, there is an area set aside for the exclusively and private use of guests – including a seat as well as table and chairs for al fresco dining options.

The Loft is accessed via a yew-lined private drive, shared with the owners, secluding it from the country lane. There is a parking space for one car situated directly outside of the property.

Guest access
The Loft has its own front door, which is away from the main entrance to the house, and guest parking is situated immediately outside of the property. The area of garden reserved for our guests is situated to the front left-hand side, as you look out from the entrance. It is lawned and edged with woodland planting – adding to its seclusion – and we provide cushions for the garden furniture. On occasions we might request access to this garden for maintenance. There are no barriers in the gardens, but we do ask our guests to respect that the other areas of the garden are private. We’re keen gardeners, in the process of renovating the gardens – we’d be very happy to show you around, so please don’t hesitate to ask!

Please note, the main living area is accessed by a flight of 12 stairs.

Other things to note
We’re in a rural location so mobile phone signal can be patchy. For the same reason, our WiFi has to be provided via satellite and can on occasions be a little slow or indeed go down.

Location

Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom

We are extremely lucky and live in a beautiful part of the country. Herefordshire is a county famed for its produce – black currants for Ribena, Tyrells Crisps, Chase Vodka, Bulmers cider and Herefordshire Beef all make this county famous. And that is not even mentioning the numerous artisanal gin companies, local farm shops and a nearby farm that supplies top-quality cherries to M&S! There is a wealth of food and local produce for you to explore all on The Loft’s doorstep. We are blessed with some outstanding local pubs and restaurants, providing the quintessential countryside feel alongside spectacular food. We provide a list of our favourites in the property’s handbook and we’re always on hand to provide recommendations.

Beyond food, The Loft is perfectly located for walking, with numerous options directly from your front door. These include Shobdon Forest’s woodland trails and paths which provide breath-taking views over The Black Mountains and the Shropshire Hills AONB. The Mortimer Trail is a popular walking route in the area and can be accessed on foot directly from The Loft. Our local church and the Shobdon Arches are just a few hundred yards away. The church is one of the finest in the country with its unique 'Strawberry Hill Gothic' interior. Spectacular views of the Malvern Hills and Hay Bluff, with the Black Mountains beyond, can be taken in on a circular walk to the church from the property. The Bateman Arms in the village is a walkable distance and – if you want to combine a slightly longer walk with a pub lunch – The Riverside at Aymestery is another walkable option.

Further afield, and for more serious walkers, Offa's Dyke, the Brecon Beacons and the Shropshire Hills AONB are all accessible by car.

The area is steeped in history, most notably one of the Wars of the Roses most famous battles – The Battle of Mortimer’s Cross – was fought very nearby in 1461. The ‘Black and White’ trail, which is done by car, will take you through several of the beautiful local villages. The picture-postcard villages of Pembridge and Eardisland are close by. Most villages in the area boast beautiful historic churches, are starting points for countryside walks and are home to a decent pub. The picturesque towns of Hay-on-Wye (home to the world-famous literary festival) and Ludlow are within easy driving distance, as is the historic city of Hereford. The city has a number of small boutique shops and cafes, particularly on Castle Street, and a spectacular Cathedral. Don’t miss the chained library and Mappa Mundi – the largest surviving medieval map – both of which make Hereford Cathedral a gem of British history. Our local town is Leominster, providing a range of traditional food shops as well as a large Morrisons supermarket.

There’s still a lot to explore which we’ve not mentioned, such as multiple National Trust properties, castles, kayaking on the River Lugg and the spectacular Hergest Gardens. We provide a more detailed handbook on ‘things to do’ within the property and throughout your stay we’re on hand to provide recommendations or ideas.

My husband and I moved 4 years ago to this beautiful countryside. We have a black and white cat and 4 chickens. I love gardening, music (I sing with Hereford Choral Society), and reading. I am a WI member and try to get involved with lots of local activities. We live right next to The Loft, so if you would like to chat, please do so. However, we respect your privacy and ability to relax and enjoy your stay with us. This area is so full of excellent places to visit. We are still exploring the area whether we want a good walk, or food, visit a garden or a festival, whether it is food/agricultural/walking or even music related, there is something to do. However, being able to stand and watch the wildlife in our garden is wonderful and I always diarise the date when we see our swallows return for the Summer!
