Breakfast
This is one of a few places in the area that has this feature.
The Red House Caravan is set on our land at the foot of the beautiful Blackstairs Mountains in rural County Carlow. The retro look caravan has been redecorated and turned into a bright, cheerful and comfortable glamping spot.

There is much to do in the area from boating to hiking to fine dining to cycling. You can walk in the Blackstairs Mountains and stroll on ancient tow paths alongside the River Barrow. We're also equidistant from the lovely towns of Kilkenny, Carlow and Enniscorthy.

The space
The caravan has a rustic and lived in feel to it while at the same time being very comfortable. It has a comfy double bed and, in a pinch, we can turn the caravan's couch into single sized bunk beds - suitable for children but perhaps a bit small for adults. There's a deck at the front door of the caravan and we provide garden furniture so you can sit out and watch the sun set or rise. The caravan has curtains for all the windows so if you don't want to wake at first light you can have a bit of a lie in. There is also closet space so you can stow your gear to make the most of the living space in the caravan.

A welcome pack of tea, ground coffee, bread, butter and homemade jam will be ready for your arrival. There is an electric kettle, a teapot and a cafetière provided. We'll supply you with fresh bottled water from our well.

The caravan is nestled within a large mature garden and surrounded by fields and stunning country vistas. You might even wake up to a cow looking in the window from across the fence. You will be perfectly situated to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside. If you want a little urban action we live just 30 minutes or so from beautiful Kilkenny City, the market town of Carlow and historic Enniscorthy in Wexford. The lovely village of Borris - with a good supermarket, famous pubs and a very good restaurant is just 10 kilometres from the caravan.

The bathroom, which is a short walk across the yard in the main house has a shower with good water pressure, a Belfast sink and a loo. It isn't fancy but it does the business.

You can get good WiFi under the raised deck near the main house. There is also 3G and 4G signal.

Guest access
You will have access to the caravan and the deck attached, the surrounding garden, the space under the raised decking at the main house (where you can get WiFi) as well as the shower and bathroom on the ground floor of the main house.

Other things to note
The bathroom shower is a short walk across the yard to the main house. The way to the main house will be lighted at night and we will provide you with a torch or lantern as well.
There is electricity in the caravan but no running water. We will supply you with clean fresh drinking water from our own well.

Location

County Carlow, Ireland

South Carlow is a very beautiful, peaceful and largely unknown part of Ireland. That is part of its charm. We're not overburdened with travellers at peak season so you can enjoy the area in a leisurely fashion.

Our local village, Rathanna, has a population of seven. Yes, I said seven. However, the surrounding countryside and farmland creates a larger community. And Rathanna is a close knit but welcoming community. My wife and I are "blow ins" (of 18 years duration) but we were warmly accepted into the community once we decided to abandon the city and raise our kids in the countryside.

Our local, Osborne's, is a wee gem of a Victorian Irish pub and is well worth a visit. In Borris village, ten kilometres (6 miles) from Rathanna there is a good supermarket, some terrific traditional pubs, including Kavanagh's, Joyces' and O'Shea's, as well as a very good restaurant in the The Step House Hotel.

Slightly further afield are villages like Bagenalstown with two large well stocked supermarkets, and Leighlinbridge which hosts the famous Lord Bagenal Inn and a remarkable collection of modern Irish art. You can visit Graiguenamanagh (I'll tell you how to pronounce it when you get here) with lovely walks along the Barrow and a visit to Duiske Abbey, a fully restored early Cistercian Church.
Or go on to St. Mullins where you can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle down the river and then enjoy a terrific meal in Clashganny House Restaurant.

You're also within striking distance of Kilkenny City with its many cultural attractions and quality eateries; Carlow Town which has the spectacular Visual art gallery as a centrepiece; New Ross with the lovely Ros Tapestries as well as the historic Irish Famine Ship and visitor centre.

There is hiking in the Blackstairs Mountains and we can supply you with Ordinance Survey maps to help guide you through the terrain.

And there is much more...

This is a beautiful part of the world. We love living here and we are delighted to share it with you.

I'm a film maker. Annabel, my wife, is a visual artist who also works in film. We live in rural County Carlow in our refurbished farmhouse on two acres of land. I'm originally from the US and Annabel is Dutch. We have both lived in Ireland for most of our adult lives. We have two grown children Ben and Ella. We are an open hospitable couple and we welcome guests. We're food fans and Annabel grows much of what we eat during the summer months. We are serious about caring for the environment while not being too dogmatic about it. We just do our best to leave a smallish footprint behind us. That being said we too like to travel and see new things and meet new people. Now that the kids are older and the number of pets to care for has decreased we look forward to more traveling in the future. You never know, we may end up on your couch or in your spare room sometime in the not too distant future. Anyways, please do come visit. We love where we live and we look forward to sharing it, and the local area, with you when you come.
