House rules
This place isn’t suitable for children under 12 and the host doesn’t allow pets or parties.
Treat yourself to a night in the wonderful & wild Pennines! Marvel at the spectacular moorland views & enjoy the rustic experience of outdoor life in a traditional & very private shepherd hut. See wild animals & birds from the hut as well our own farm animals (goats, horses, cows, sheep, hens & ducks).
Expect lots of mud (all year round ) & dust in a dry summer - this is a working farm and a truly rustic experience!!

Please read the house rules & check in details before you set off.

The space
Our cosy, fully insulated shepherd hut is nestled into the hill providing excellent shelter from the elements with outstanding views of the remote and wild landscape.
There is a very comfortable double bed with pillows provided , you will need to bring your own duvet, sheet and pillowcases.
Basic cooking facilities- toaster, microwave ( we suggest bringing ready meals), kettle ( with tea and coffee) and barbecue ( bring your own charcoal or wood please). Cutlery, crockery and essential utensils provided. There is also a cool box ( I can freeze your blocks and provide a frozen one when you arrive). Mains water is just outside the hut.
The compost loo is in a separate hut adjacent, with a basin, towel and a jug of water to wash your hands.
The hut has electric lighting including lamps and a heater.
Outside you will find a bench, chairs and the bbq/fire pit.

During the muddier months it is necessary for us to protect the hut and its outdoor space from livestock, the electric fence must not be touched.
Feel free to roam around our farm; plunge into the little lake for wild swimming, take the rowing boat out and perhaps catch a fish or paddle in the brook.
You’ll find an extensive network of public footpaths from the farm which will take you up and down this beautiful undiscovered valley. We are at roughly 1000ft so bring warm and waterproof gear if you want to go walking.
Thursden Valley is a unique landscape with evidence of previous quarrying and “hushings” - a legacy from lime extraction dating back over 200 years.
Very close by is the Pennine Bridleway for walking, mountain biking and horse riding; also a network of footpaths including the Pennine Way , the Brontë Way and the Burnley Way. The National Trust beauty spot Hardcastle Crags is a very short drive away.

Guest access
You have access to the farm but please remember to shut gates and respect the farm animals and wildlife.

Parking is off road, on our driveway about 100 metres from the hut.

Other things to note
We often have goat milk and fresh eggs available - please ask.
Since Covid 19, bedding is NOT available for hire- please bring your own duvet with cover, double sheet and pillowcases.
Microwave available if you prefer to cook a ready meal rather than go to the pub.
Please bring your Wellington boots as it is very muddy and a torch so that you can find the hut and loo in the dark!
You also have the use of a third hut which can be used to dry wet waterproof clothing and boots away from the living space.
If you enjoy feeding animals (at your own risk) ... all our animals can safely eat oats... just plain porridge oats. The hens and goats will eat kitchen scraps too. Please do not feed our dogs as they ( well, one in particular) has a weight problem!!
Our place is for people with an adventurous spirit, people who like basic but charming accommodation in the middle of a field ( which is often muddy).

Several pubs are within a few miles including the excellent Pack Horse Inn at Widdop , The Hare and Hounds at Haggate and The Shooters Arms at Southfield . All serve typical pub meals every weekend but not every weekday.
Nearest shop and take-away outlet is about 3 miles away at Harle Syke,
HAPPA , the horse sanctuary is within walking distance and does excellent lunches in their small cafe.

Hello I am Louise ... I am a retired NHS nurse and have recently moved to the West Yorkshire/ Lancashire borders with my partner John. We run a small Pennine farm and have lots of animals. Every day we milk our goats, collect our eggs and usually ride our horses if the weather is nice. We are learning about our local area all the time and will certainly share what we have found with you. We love our home and feel privileged to be living in such a beautiful and undiscovered valley. We shall look forward to meeting you.
