The space
A lovely countryside cottage situated in four acres of tropical garden, with beautiful views of the Northern Range Mountains and rolling plains of Central Trinidad. Trinidad is the most southerly island of the Caribbean and shares much of the flora and fauna of tropical South America. Ajoupa Cottage is an Ideal spot for bird watchers with about 50 different species of birds to be seen. Photographers, artists or writers seeking peace and inspiration will be right at home. The cottage is self catering with room for two extra people if needed. Please ask about the extra charges. Limited bus and taxi service are also available. Tours can be recommended for places of interest such as the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, Wild Fowl Trust, hiking to waterfalls, beaches, visits to the Pitch Lake, Nariva wetlands, Asa Wright Nature Centre and other cultural /historical sites. Please ask us what festivals may be happening at the time of your stay so that you can include this as part of your experience.

The cottage has an upstairs bedroom, a writing room which can also sleep two children/adults if necessary, a bathroom with shower, a kitchen/ living room and wooden deck. Laundry facilities are available at the main house.

The Ajoupa Garden is an arboretum of over 100 species of trees, many of them native, which attract many species of birds and wildlife. The hosts are very knowledgeable about the history, architecture and culture of Trinidad and are happy to answer any questions about the flora and fauna in their garden.

The main house , a plantation house in the ginger bread style, is an historic building 160 years old, and has been designated a national heritage site. It is also the home of Ajoupa Pottery. Resident artist Bunty O'Connor maintains a studio where she hosts Raku workshops from time to time.

Guest access
Our 4 acre garden is available for wandering and bird watching. There are trails with benches along the way. Wifi is available in the cottage.

Other things to note
Mosquitoes are part of any tropical stay. There is a mosquito net for the king size bed and we recommend that guests use it.

We live in a small village boasting one bar or rumshop. Most of our neighbours have never moved from this spot. It is very rural with teak and mango trees. A peaceful place.
