Experience a bit of the laid back life Batticaloa has to offer in this basic but nice house near the lagoon. A great place to use as starrting point for trips to Batti Town, Kallady/Navaledy and Pasikudah, or to enjoy the sun(set) from the rooftop.

The space

The house is located in Paalameenmadu, a quiet neighborhood in Batticaloa and a very nice place to be. Located near the Lighthouse area, guests can take boatrides across the lagoon, visit the small fishmarket in the morning and see (and hear!) the many birds around the house throughout the day. The house itself was entirely wiped out by the Boxing Day Tsunami, but was recently rebuilt. So recently, in fact, that it is fair to say that the finishing touches still have to be done (but we're not talking about the Hitlon anyway, so who cares). It's a nice, two-story house that towers over the much smaller houses in the neighborhood. The bedrooms share a bathroom per floor, and downstairs there's a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a place to park cars. And, much like a cherry on top, the rooftop terrace provides a great place to relax and enjoy the sun(set).

Interaction with guests

Mr. Thambirajah, the owner of this home, was born in Batticaloa but now lives in Europe. It is Mr. Selvaraja (see photo) who will welcome and take care of you. He speaks a bit of English and can arrange food, transport and even some local activities, such as a boat ride through the lagoon. In case you get stuck in translation you can always call us.

It was a nice experience to stay here. Location was pretty easy to find, relatively close from Batticaloa train / bus station and walking distance from the market :) We arrived a bit earlier than their check in time but had no issue to check in immediately. Balcony was an unexpected bonus which we really liked. However they put a flannel cover over the mattress that is usually used in winter as we know. Therefore it was very difficult to fall asleep due to the warmness of the bed :( (Batticaloa in Aug is boiling hot, I can say that). We barely managed to have 2~3 hours of sleep and woke up multiple time. Apart from the bed, We enjoyed our stay.

During your trip through Sri Lanka, you should definitely try living in an actual Sri Lankan home, at least once. We've stayed for two nights, the room was really tiny, don't expect anything else but a bed and a small table. Don't get scared though, everything was clean and loked very nice. The only english speaking person in the family is their daughter Priya, who is very kind and helpful. As usual, you can order traditional Sri Lankan dinner and breakfast - both were good and pretty spicy so take that in notion if you're not a fan.

Sangara's Place is perfect for those looking for a quiet & simple homestay in Batticaloa. Priya & her family are an absolute delight & the food was amazing. The location is perfect - just 15 minutes walk from the old town & the Dutch fort. This place is amazing value for money & we would highly recommend!

Absolutely great and authentic! If you're not looking for expensive hotel, spent a night here, you will get a real Sri Lankan experience. Tiny room with, tiny terrace, nice view over local rooftops. Little girl and her grandmother will look up all information you need and her father will take you to the bus stop with his Tuktuk. They also can arrange a meal, if you are interested. If you want to see the city, instead of spending all day at your apartment, this is what you're looking for. Ideal for backpackers.

Fantastic authentic homestay! Very close to the Batticaloa lagoon for great views, and 15 mins walk into town (20 to the bus station). Only problem is it is very hard to find so your tuk tuk driver will need to ring their phone number to explain where their house is. There is no sign which is ok as it is their house. The parents of the family don't speak English too well, so their daughter (Priya I think) does all the communication with you and she is one of the most loveliest people I met in Sri Lanka! She is so sweet and her English is great-we chatted for hours about Sri Lankan life and lots of other things. You feel so welcome, and the food her mum cooks is so tasty. You are given so much food (only for Rs 200 per meal) and always offered more and check if everything is ok with your food. Room is very basic but if you're a budget traveller looking for an authentic homestay experience this is perfect. I asked if they have a bike to rent, which they didn't, but they were kind enough to find one for me and bring it to their home. Amazing hospitality and would happily stay there again and recommend this place! Thank you!

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
