Just 1.5 miles from downtown NC, our "Down Home Family Flat" is sized for a family or two, impeccably furnished with treasures from global travels, and situated on a lovely south-facing hill above Deer Creek. The space is fully equipped for comfort and convenience for up to 6 guests--come for a weekend retreat, or take a longer stay on this 25 acre homestead. The apartment is downstairs of the main house, yet private entrances offer seclusion and sanctuary with panoramic views of the forest.

The space
The space has been hosting longer-term guests and tenants the past year, and--given coronavirus--is suitable for stays of a week to a month for a family looking to retreat in a spacious, comfortable, and rural setting.
The "Down Home" is an apartment designed and built out 5 years ago on the first floor of the main house on a majestic 25-acre homestead on a southern slope overlooking a stretch of Deer Creek. Well furnished, fully equipped and creatively appointed, this large flat is a sanctuary of comfort and inspiration. The property includes an organic tiny farm, a couple of vacation rentals, retreat spaces and a seasonal campground owned and managed by river conservationists.
Located about 1.5 miles from downtown Nevada City--a mile of which is a slow, narrow dirt road--you'll park just steps (well, about 30 yards) away from your private entrance to the apartment, which includes a large deck, barbecue grill and outdoor seating area for your exclusive use.

The apartment is approximately 1600 square feet total, and includes a master bedroom (with private 1/2 bath and private entrance), a second bedroom (with queen bed and direct access to the deck), a study room, which includes a trundle bed (i.e. set up as a daybed couch, or two single beds), a fully equipped and modern kitchen and dining space, a den/sitting room, and a full bathroom with slate tile shower. There's also a washer & dryer tucked away in a closet space, as well as an outdoor bathtub to soak under the stars. We provide the bathsalts!

As mentioned, the property is a large parcel with several other buildings, a garden and orchard, and chickens, goats and a couple dogs also call the property home. There's public land on both sides of the property, and several public trails (hiking and biking) are accessible from right outside your door.

You can also borrow the free bikes for a ride on a dirt road to the fun of downtown, or pedal further afield on a network of trails. Let us know in advance if you'd like to use a bike or two (we share them between guests who stay at our other vacation rental: the "Cozy Cabin"), and we'll let you know if others have claimed the bikes during your stay.

Location

Nevada City, California, United States

As for the "neighborhood" of the homestead, a few notes: the 25-acre property is surrounded on three sides by public land owned by BLM. Deer Creek runs right through the property. The owners helped design and fundraise for the Tribute Trail and have provided an easement for the trail on the property. While you'll have exclusive use of the apartment and the deck area, and should expect a peaceful and serene setting with the sound of the creek below, you should note that the apartment is one of a few habitations on this property. Your hosts live in the main house upstairs (Steve, Elizabeth, their 14 year old daughter and two dogs)--but the entrances and orientation is such that you might never cross paths with them. Further away and out of sight (but not quite out of earshot; quite hours 10pm to 8am) is a creekside group campground called Dipper Camp that we also host.

While courtesy calls for you to respect the privacy of other residents and guests on the property, you're welcome to roam the pathways that lead to a network of public trails on hundreds of acres of neighboring public lands, including swimming holes, beaches, jumping rocks and footbridges over Deer Creek, and hiking and biking trails that ultimately lead back to town or further afield.

About Deer Creek: There are lots of "Deer Creeks" in California; this is the one that has the "Scotts Flat" reservoirs in the headwaters, then flows through Nevada City, past this property, then down through Lake Wildwood and ultimately flows into the Yuba River. Prospective guests have asked about flows: Deer Creek flows refreshingly cool and steady and predictable throughout the summer, because the flow is both augmented by South Yuba water and the releases from upper Scotts Flat reservoir, there's really no risk that Deer Creek (at Dipper Camp) will experience low flows, even at the end of a hot dry summer. Your hosts have all spent careers advocating for free-flowing natural rivers--here and internationally--but are contentedly resigned to the fact that Deer Creek water management results in a refreshingly cool and deep swimming holes along this property all summer long.

I had a "first career" as an environmental, economic justice and human rights advocate, leading conservation programs and river protection organizations in Marin County, the "Yuba Watershed" and internationally (primarily in Asia, Latin America and Africa). I've lived, traveled, worked and studied in dozens of countries and cultures. Having returned to my "hometown" of Nevada City with my wife Tania and our teenage daughter, I now split my time between hosting guests, managing a flower farm, and volunteering with community organizations. Having first hosted AirBnb guests when living in Berkeley years ago (when AirBnb was truly a "sharing economy" experience, sharing our bathroom and kitchen with visitors from all over the world), we've evolved our hospitality operation to include a number of distinctive and high quality accommodations in Nevada City and environs. Both in our own Victorian-era home in downtown Nevada City--and in partnership with friends and family who own and steward scenic agricultural, forest and stream-side properties outside of town--we aim to provide our guests with an exceptional and memorable experience while visiting Nevada City and South Yuba River. Jason was raised in Nevada City and we bought this grand 1880 Victorian when it wasn't so grand in 2005, and have now put over a decade of love, care and resources into making it our family home to share with friends and guests. We are water people who advocate for healthy rivers and social justice issues locally and around the world. For six years, Jason was director of the local river advocacy organization, SYRCL (including the Wild & Scenic Film Festival), and Tania was director of the Yuba Watershed Institute, founded by Gary Snyder and others. In addition to these extensive relationships with local people and place, we both have also led international organizations: Tania primarily supporting popular education in Latin America and Jason's work with International Rivers was global in scope. Jason's attention is now focused on the home, garden, family, guests and local projects, while Tania works very full-time as a public policy facilitator throughout California. We have a 15 year old daughter who enjoys pottery, poetry and just about any new and interesting experience. We love gardening, travel, books, exploring the natural world and adventures of all kinds. While hesitant to claim fluency in any language, we can make conversation in Spanish, Russian, Italian and Shona, can read some French and have translation dictionaries for Swahili and Indonesian languages!

During your stay
You have a few co-hosts. Jason lives mostly in downtown Nevada City and provides overall management of this apartment, and other listings for this property, on Airbnb. He's generally available to come out for any on-site concerns, should they arise, but generally will not be available to welcome you at check-in.
Steve & Elizabeth are the owners of the property and live in the main house above the apartment. They're busy folks with jobs that often take them out of town, but when they're home and about the land, they're happy to meet with guests, share about the homestead and projects, and respond to questions or issues.
