House rules
The host doesn’t allow pets, parties, or smoking.
Casa da Laranjeira (Orange Tree House), with yellow-rimmed windows, can accommodate up to five people. At the front of the house is a pleasant outdoor living area, perfect for meals and evening gatherings or for a sunny breakfast.
The most important feature of the Casas da Capela at Monte da Charneca is the unique Hillside Chapel, the “Capela do Monte” designed by Álvaro Siza, the most famous Portuguese architect, being the first to win the prestigious Pritzker Prize.

The space
With two lounge chairs with a perfect view over the Capela do Monte (Hillside Chapel) invite our guests to enjoy the sun on the private terrace, and an outdoor grill can be used for family barbecues.
Entering the house is a large space that includes a living room and a dining area. The white walls, the red tiled floor and ceiling with wooden beams are traditional in southern Portugal. With a rustic but refined decoration, the space is cozy and welcoming, with a fireplace for colder days and a plasma TV.
The house also has a good Wi-Fi connection.
Just off the living area is a traditional kitchen, with hand-painted Portuguese tiles with images of fruits and vegetables. The kitchen is fully equipped with toaster, electric kettle, electric coffee maker, microwave, fridge and freezer, dishwasher, oven and stove and all utensils needed for cooking.
The ground floor also has a bedroom with three single beds, two of which are bunk beds.
There are two separate bathrooms on the ground floor, one with a shower and a washing machine, and the other with a bathtub, both with traditional blue or yellow Portuguese tiles.
A traditional wooden staircase separates the ground floor from the mezzanine level, which contains a sitting area with a desk for working and another small bedroom with a double bed.
All the windows are equipped with mosquito screens. In the winter, in addition to the fireplace, all the rooms have Heatwafers, or low energy consumption heaters.
The wooden details, the red floor tiles and white-washed walls, the wicker baskets, the fireplace and the surrounding plants make it a great choice for families or couples.

Other things to note
Tap water: The water in the house comes from our own borehole that taps into an underground river 80 metres underground. The tap water is purified and can be used for drinking straight from the tap. It is not necessary to buy bottled water.
Toilets: All the houses have septic tanks on site. Toilet paper can go into the toilets, but nothing else, please: no sanitary napkins, cotton pads, hair, oil, cleaning fluids, etc.
Parking: Please use the parking places under the solar panels.
Garbage: There is no public garbage collection in Monte da Charneca. Guests need to take their own garbage to the “Eco-Ilhas” around the area, including in Espiche and Barão de São João. Bottles, paper, plastics, batteries, etc. should be recycled. Compost can be thrown into the designated area just by the upper orchard.
Laundry: All houses are equipped with washing machines. Clotheslines can be found on the way down to the orchard, near the upper gardens. Beds and towels will be changed once a week.
Outdoor furniture: Please store the cushions for the terrace furniture in the house, particularly at night, so the animals will not use them.
Swimming: Our cistern, which is used to irrigate the orchard and lawns, can be used as a swimming pool. The water is untreated and is renewed most evenings after irrigation. Please rinse off any sand before entering the pool.
Caution must be used with young children. The cistern is deep (2.5 meters).
CHILDREN UNDER 10 MUST NOT USE THE POOL WITHOUT THE SUPERVISION OF AN ADULT.
Gardens: Manfred is our gardener. Most of the gardens are shared with all the houses. Please respect the vegetation by not allowing children to climb on the trees or pick fruit that is not in season.
Animals: there is 3 family and lovely dogs in the property, they are very very friendly and they belong to the owners. They are our water dogs and they are a hypo-allergenic breed. Flora, Abby and Dana are there names :)
Firewood: If you wish to make a fire in the fireplace or the barbeque, please buy wood and charcoal from the supermarket. Do not use the firewood in the garden storage sheds, as it belongs to the neighbors.

Location

Faro, Portugal

The Algarve is not just about beach resorts and summer holidays; it is becoming more and more attractive as a destination for year-round tourism. With exceptional light and sunshine, the Algarve is one of the most attractive and popular regions of Portugal.

Casas da Capela do Monte are set in the region known as Barlavento (Western Algarve) and are part of the district of Lagos. Lagos is an ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history. It is one of the most visited cities in Portugal because of its stunning beaches, coastal rock formations, and historical interest. Lagos was the center of the Portuguese “Age of Discovery” and frequent home of Prince Henry the Navigator. The “caravelas” or special ships that took the Portuguese navigators around the world were made largely in Lagos and left from here on their voyages of discovery.

Other historic cities such as Silves, the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve with a spectacular hillside fortress, and Sagres, the southwestern tip of Portugal where Prince Henry founded a navigation school are within a 30-minute drive to the Casas da Capela.

Nearby Barão de São João is also one of the best-preserved villages of the Algarve. The village has a VTT center, with many bike trails in the region, and the Lagos Zoo.

This part of the Algarve is very unspoilt compared to the areas further east, and has some of the most spectacular coastal landscapes. In addition to its superb beaches and beautiful nature, there are many outdoor activities, including birdwatching, hiking and horseback riding. Surfing is also one of the main attractions of this region of Portugal, as the Atlantic Coast is 20-30 minutes away.
