Pōhatu, meaning stone in Maori, is a beautiful 1925 Arts & Crafts house built by one of regions wealthiest landowners. Lovingly restored in 2020, the guest room is self contained and absorbs the morning sun. Pohatu is located beside the Waimata River, on a 3000m2 section surrounded by mature trees and gardens which afford privacy for sitting outside with your favourite beverage. The property is a short walk to the beach, shops, bars and restaurants.

The space
The studio is attached to the house but has separate external access with a lockbox system so that you can arrive at any time after 2pm and let yourselves in.
The kitchenette is fully stocked with crockery, utensils and glassware, a fridge, microwave and tea & coffee supplies. There is also a BBQ outside the French doors for your use. The garden is also populated with native birds, Tui, Fantails, Kereru, Morepork, Kingfishers, Blue Herons & the occasional NZ Falcon.
There are two kayaks that guests are welcome to use.
James, is a keen historian who is regularly asked to speak publicly regarding his knowledge of historical architecture and the history of this area, and he is always willing to share his knowledge (if asked) with our guests.

At the end of the street is a Four Square Superette with all the supplies (including alcohol) you would need in a hurry, plus the Raglan Roast Coffee shop next door to that, does some of the best coffees in town.
Within 100m is Anzac Park which runs along the Waimata River.
On Saturday morning a visit to the local Farmers Market is a must. Great food and atmosphere. The market is located just over 1km from Pohatu.
The Wharf area containing bars and restaurants is only a 1km down the road. You can relax & have a few drinks with dinner then walk home.
