The space

THE SPACE
Our 1850's Greek Revival farmhouses in a quiet neighborhood less than a mile from downtown Andover. Set on almost an acre of land, it is surrounded by gardens and backed by 80 acres of Phillips Academy Bird Sanctuary. We have two private, second floor guest rooms available by the night or by the week. The larger of the two rooms is furnished with antique double bed, comfortable chair for reading or just relaxing, 19th century bureau, full double closet, large mirror and Currier and Ives prints. The room faces south with lovely views of the back yard, gardens and tall white pines in the Bird Sanctuary. The shared bath with tub and shower is just down the hall from the guest rooms. We offer tables and chairs in the garden for resting and relaxing, and plenty of off street parking. We'll have freshly ground coffee and a large selection of teas waiting for you in the morning.

We are not big TV watchers, so our television lives in a downstairs closet. In the fall and winter we bring it out on Sunday evenings for favorite PBS programs. If there is a program you'd like to see we'll be glad to set it up in the living room for you.

Guest access

GUEST ACCESS
If we are up at the same time in the morning we’ll gladly have coffee and tea ready. If our schedules don’t mesh, we’ll show you where everything is and you are welcome to fix your own. For guests staying for an extended period we have a small separate refrigerator to keep perishable food and space in the cupboards to store non-perishable foods. You are always welcome to help yourself to tea and coffee. In the summer we enjoy eating outdoors in the garden, especially for breakfast. In colder seasons we generally eat in the kitchen or you may choose to eat in our dining room.
During fall and winter, we have a warming evening fire in the living room Franklin stove.

Interaction with guests

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
We are both self employed and have offices in the house. On some days we’ll be available all day and other days or evenings we’ll be on the run, depending on schedules.
We really enjoy company and meeting new people. We are happy to help get guests situated and give directions and suggestions for all the wonderful things to see and do in Andover, southern New Hampshire, on the North Shore or in nearby Boston. Boston is easily accessible by private car and commuter rail, which leaves and returns to Andover on a regular basis.

Other things to note

This is an old farmhouse and the 12 stairs to the second floor are fairly steep and could be challenging for people with any mobility issues.

A simple room in a beautifully quaint home filled with charm. Ned showed us their secret, backyard entrance to the bird sanctuary so we could go for a gorgeous little walk. They had an entire drawer of teas, plus coffee and bread out for us every morning. We have a new home in Andover. We will definitely be staying with Ned and Betsy every time we visit Andover.

Ned and Betsy made an effort to welcome us into their home. Despite having a busy weekend of their own, they graciously took the time to make sure we were settled. Every morning they set aside a spread of breakfast including coffee/tea, granola with yogurt, toast and jams. When I asked Ned about opportunities to go for a run, he walked us through Betsy's gorgeous garden into the Andover Arboretum. His helpful tips ensured I did not get lost. Betsy even gave us Ned's family's fish chowder recipe! Ned and Betsy are darling, and we're glad we stayed with them for this wedding weekend.

Response from Ned & Betsy:
HI Shana, It was lovely meeting you both also! We did enjoy the chowder and had a great visit with Susan and David. He is the person who made the beautiful Shaker box on the bureau in your room. We truly enjoyed having you here and wish you both the very best in the coming year!!

We certainly enjoyed having you, Yoshi! I'm guessing your trip home was easier than the Friday night trip. I certainly hope so. If you are ever back in our area, stop by to say hello! Betsy

My return trip to Andover after many years was welcomed by such caring hosts. The room was great; the bed is comfortable, the scenery is spectacular; the entire home location is terrific, and plants and flowers surrounding the location make the stay extra special. All basic amenities are provided, and Betsy provides breakfast snacks while also access to the entire kitchen if you want. Although I'm not that tall, I did catch the slanted ceiling a few times but all in all, A+ rating.
