This self-contained handcrafted cottage overlooks Newcastle Island Park and anchorage. It is a 10 minute foot passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo and 5 minute walk. The cabin suits a single person or couple wanting a simple and elegant retreat.

The space

Small cabin on my waterfront property on Protection Island. It overlooks Newcastle Island anchorage and is surrounded by arbutus and Douglas-fir trees and meadow. The cabin has a simple kitchen and bathroom, sleeping loft and sitting room. There is a double bed upstairs and a sofa which can be made up as a second bed. If one has mobility issues, the ladder to the loft maybe a limiting factor.

Guest access

Interaction with guests

I enjoy meeting and chatting with guests but mostly I understand that guests appreciate privacy once they have settled in.

Other things to note

Dinghy Dock Marine Pub and Restaurant (URL HIDDEN) is a unique experience and is lots of fun with pretty great beer and food. I will stock the fridge for breakfast. There are lots of walking, cycling and beach exploration opportunities on Protection and Newcastle Island.

Trudy's cabin on the wonderfully secluded (and welcoming) Protection Island is a delight. It's comfortable, perfectly located for the beach, the pub, the ferry, and if you have the opportunity you should definitely talk to Trudy about using one of her kayaks and spending the day on the water with the seals, otters and herons like the locals! She provided us with home made breakfast makings (the granola and jam are lovely) and we finished each day in the nearby Dinghy Dock Pub, with its easy, laid back vibe. Worth noting is the small ferry crossing, which might not be easy for everyone, but it's quick, regular and is a cute introduction to a very special place. We'd go back again to stay with Trudy (and her lovely dog) in a heartbeat.

I came to stay here with a friend for the weekend and we had a great, relaxing time. Trudy was helpful and nice, we enjoyed the cabin and kayaking and biking around the island. It is a great spot for a quiet, no fuss get away.

A beautiful place to go and get away from the day to day life. Trudy was very easy going and hospitable ! We loved spending the couple of days walking around the island and swimming in the beaches. :)

We had a lovely stay at this very special location. Such a great place to be! The island has a serene atmosphere, Trudy and her friends / family are wonderful people! Thanks so much!

Sweetest cottage we've ever been to. The view is wonderful! Trudy made sure the kitchen was stocked with breakfast supplies, so nice! Protection Island is really nice and quiet but with a really nice pub at the dock. We borrowed Trudy's kayak for a nice trip around the island. We would definitely recommend her place if you want a great experience on Vancouveris Island. Wish we had stayed longer!

This is such a special place. Protection Island itself is such an eclectic place and there is something about Trudy's place that just makes you chill and relax. We swam, walked or kayaked (or all three) every day and enjoyed the beautiful sunsets from the cabin. A real rustic escape. We can't wait to find an excuse to return.

We stayed in Trudy’s cabin for a 3 day getaway, July 2017. My wife and I had a memorable time in protection and new Castle island. Specially because boat and kayak were the only means of transportation and this was new to us : ) Trudy had two kayaks which we were allowed to use and this was probably the most exciting part of the experience. We had our breakfast then paddled to one of the beaches, swam and relax for a while and then paddled somewhere else : ) Trudy was very responsive and gave us all the details needed for our trip. The neighbours are extremely friendly and the area is very safe. The cabin itself is very small yet with a very nice view from the bedroom. I would emphasize on the size of the cabin, I’m a tall guy and sometimes I had difficulties with how small the cabin was. There is no AC and the windows of the bedroom don’t have screens so it can be really hot and the small fan might not help. The cabin could have been a little bit cleaner. You could see spider webs everywhere. Having said that compared to the price and the fact that many other people had stay in a tent if they wanted to camp in new castle island, our accommodation was a lot fancier : ) We were also allowed to pick from their garden and also use the Bbq which we did : ) Overal we had a wonderful weekend there and we enjoyed the relaxing environment, the nice and quiet beaches and the kayaking : )

I am friendly and adventuresome. I have travelled widely around the world but always love to come back to my home on the Salish Sea. Gardening, sharing good food with friends, watercolour painting, mountains, sea- kayaking and working to conserve wild places and nature are essentials of a good life.
