This small self-contained handcrafted cottage overlooks Newcastle Island Park and anchorage. It is a 10 minute foot passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo and 5 minute walk. The cabin suits a single person or couple wanting a simple and elegant retreat. Breakfast supplies are included.

The space

Small cabin on my waterfront property on Protection Island. It overlooks Newcastle Island anchorage and is surrounded by arbutus and Douglas-fir trees and meadow. The cabin has a simple kitchen and bathroom, sleeping loft and sitting room. There is a double bed upstairs and a sofa which can be made up as a second bed. If one has mobility issues, the ladder to the loft maybe a limiting factor.

Guest access

Kayaking opportunities (depending on experience),
Island bicycles
Shared laundry

Interaction with guests

I enjoy meeting and chatting with guests but mostly I understand that guests appreciate privacy once they have settled in.

Other things to note

Dinghy Dock Marine Pub and Restaurant (URL HIDDEN) is a unique experience and is lots of fun with pretty great beer and food. I will stock the fridge for breakfast. There are lots of walking, cycling and beach exploration opportunities on Protection and Newcastle Island.

Super quaint little cabin. Had lots of rustic charm. We were able to borrow Trudy's kayak, which was very kind of her and tons of fun. Space is small so if you have mobility issues it might be a challenge but it suited us quite well. Would recommend. :)

Very beautiful little place with its own slice of beach. Great hostess and a lovely dog named T Dog, who made our experience even better.

This is a tiny, but thoughtfully appointed cabin. The location was perfect for us and best of all, we could bring our dog. A caution that tall people need to duck when going between the living room and kitchen/bathroom!

John and I had a fabulous stay in Trudy's Cozy Cottage on Protection Island. HEr attention to detail to make our stay special was most welcome. We appreciated having and Emily and wee Renee meet us upon our arrival. We enjoyed Kayaking around the island numerous times especially during the solar eclipse. We observed the family of sea otters on the neighbours dock every morning while enjoying our coffee. We happened upon many seals sunbathing on an exposed rock at low tide between the two islands. We paddled very close after being sure they were not upset by our presence. Evening paddles were spectacular. Our stay was SO relaxing and had us well prepared for the wedding celebration of my son and his fiancé at Whistler, which was spectacular. Thank so much. We would have loved to have met you but I am sure your Northern BC trip has been great.

A beautifully placed cottage. Trudy was an exceptional host. As others have said, she provides a lot of lovely breakfast foods for her guests. She is very quick to reply to questions and requests. My partner and I had a lovely couple of days here. The step ladder can take some getting use to but the view from it onto the water and Newcastle island is breath taking. The cottage has lots of cute features and is ideal for one or two for a relaxing time. I enjoyed playing with T-Dog as well :) Protection Island is tranquil and we discovered Trudy's place is one of the best areas of the island. We loved going to the Dingy Dock Pub every evening as well. If we didn't live so far away, we'd actually come back to Trudy's again! Thanks for the lovely stay.

We stayed in Trudy’s cabin for a 3 day getaway, July 2017. My wife and I had a memorable time in protection and new Castle island. Specially because boat and kayak were the only means of transportation and this was new to us : ) Trudy had two kayaks which we were allowed to use and this was probably the most exciting part of the experience. We had our breakfast then paddled to one of the beaches, swam and relax for a while and then paddled somewhere else : ) Trudy was very responsive and gave us all the details needed for our trip. The neighbours are extremely friendly and the area is very safe. The cabin itself is very small yet with a very nice view from the bedroom. I would emphasize on the size of the cabin, I’m a tall guy and sometimes I had difficulties with how small the cabin was. There is no AC and the windows of the bedroom don’t have screens so it can be really hot and the small fan might not help. The cabin could have been a little bit cleaner. You could see spider webs everywhere. Having said that compared to the price and the fact that many other people had stay in a tent if they wanted to camp in new castle island, our accommodation was a lot fancier : ) We were also allowed to pick from their garden and also use the Bbq which we did : ) Overal we had a wonderful weekend there and we enjoyed the relaxing environment, the nice and quiet beaches and the kayaking : )

I am friendly and adventuresome. I have travelled widely around the world but always love to come back to my home on the Salish Sea. Gardening, sharing good food with friends, watercolour painting, mountains, sea- kayaking and working to conserve wild places and nature are essentials of a good life.
