A great place to wind down to after a long day of kite-surfing on Kalpitiya Lagoon.

The price is for the entire cabin and there are two cabins available.

The space

Built specifically for guests in a nice, open space below the palm trees, Nelson's consists of two separate cabins, each with a private bathroom and a kitchen. There's place to sit outside to read a book. Ideal for longern stays (which are more economical) Nelson's is also available for short-term stays.

Located at about 150 metres from the beach, 4 kilometres from the lagoon and 7 from the town, you're a hop and a step away from everything you need here.

Interaction with guests

Nelson, a fisherman, has invested his life savings in this place, in hopes of riding the tourism wave along with the surfers. He's done well, we think. Together with his wife he lives in a separate home nearby. Almost every day he goes fishing. If you ask him, he'll bring you the day's catch, which might include a nice fat lobster if you're lucky.

Nelson is a lovely man. He's very friendly and came to say hello regularly, while still respecting our privacy. The room is very basic, but everything you need in kalpitya, with mosquito net on the bed. The area is quite remote and so perfect for a restful, quiet getaway. There's the sea lion restaurant across the road, which has great Sri Lankan food. Not many other shops or restaurants near by. Probably a good idea to bring your own water/snacks. Left takes you to the fishing village, and right to resorts and some nice swimming beaches. We didn't kite surf, but the beach just near by had lots of surfers. Nelson recommended someone to take us to see Dolphins and we saw hundreds! Was really gorgeous.

The location of the house has great potential but unless the standard is improved it is not suitable. On arrival we were told that Nelson was away with his wife in holiday. His mother did come but could not speak a word of English and did not want to get involved. As per the listing we were expecting a cooked meal at a agreed price from Nelson and his wife. In both the cabins there were damp mattresses, mouldy pillows and no hot water. Essentials means towels and linen for all guests not just half the guests. If there is a kitchen it is understood that there would be some facility to use it. A fisherman's cabin does not need to have poor sanitation and no running tap water. I was also told that the earlier guests had complained too about cleanliness but there was no improvement. Normally we are very easy going family, but this is not something that we would recommend to anyone. The accomodation was definitely not worth the AUD 75 per night we were charged for the two cabins. Not recommended till drastic changes have been made.

Nelson's home is a simple accomodation set in a sandy garden (nice for the children) with veranda and a common dining outside shelter (no table inside). It suits better 2 couples or family with old children as Nelson's home is composed of 2 independant studios. The kitchen (and kitchenery) is poor. But we didn't need to use it at all thanks to the next door Sea lion very good family restaurant (they have room service !). The beach is very close - we enjoyed it with the children (very safe, water not clear, nearly no one). Departures for dolphins or snorkeling trips are also close (across the mini lagoon). To find Nelson's home : mention the Sakura resort to the tuk-tuk driver, it is just across the road. All in all, we spent 3 nights there enjoying the relaxing time, the beach, the dolphins trip, and the smiling welcome of Nelson.

Fine place! We lived in the house of 5 wonderful days. It is located very conveniently and close from the ocean and the fishing village where it is possible to buy vegetables and fruit, water. The territory is big, a parking, a little table and chairs on the street, a hammock. In the house there is all necessary. Went to the ocean to look at excursion dolphins, agreed through owners, it was tremendous. On a beach practically there are not people, it is possible to ride on the kaytakh, to watch declines. A place for those who really wants to enjoy rest quietly. The neighbour's cat was very much fallen in love, he loves milk and shrimps, we with it very much made friends, and even sadly was to leave!

We stayed at Nelsons place for four days, and it was a nice place for the end of our Sri Lanka trip! Clean and nice, close to the beach and very friendly hosts. Good location for a reasonable price. We asked Nelson for some complimentary kitchen equipment and he gave it to us right away.

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
