Montagu, Western Cape, South Africa

Montagu is hands-down one of the most picturesque towns in the Western Cape, if not South Africa, not just according to the locals and many visitors, but also according to the panel of judges who awarded it the Village of the Year in 2002.

This peaceful town is steeped in history and is famous for its awe inspiring rock formations, orchards, vineyards, local herbs and healing hot mineral springs. Visitors will discover the Wildflower Nature garden, bird sanctuaries, nature reserve, museums, art galleries, historic homes, lovely hiking trails, 4X4 and mountain bike trails and ideal rock climbing opportunities.

Approaching Montagu from the Breede River one travels alongside the old Bain’s road through the spectacular Cogmans Kloof eventually negotiating the Hole in the Rock, known locally as the Gateway to the Klein Karoo.

Montagu is blessed with the wonderful climate that the Western Cape offers. It has warm to hot summers, mild winters and long spring and autumn months. The town is surrounded with hills. The unpolluted horizon is one of the chief attractions. Flowers are a passion among the town’s gardeners. The annual Rose show in October is the showcase for the town's famous range of roses.

One of Montagu’s chief attractions are the radioactive hot springs situated on the edge of the present day town. It is not certain when these were first discovered but the refreshing and healing waters were known about in the early history of the town.

I'm one of those 'tech guys': a bit of a designer, a bit of a coder, jack-of-all-trades, master of none. I've lived practically everywhere in this crazy little town over the past 20 years: from Newlands, Claremont, Observatory, Vredehoek, Gardens, Camps Bay, Three Anchor Bay all the way to the inner city – in the cozy little loft apartment where we lived the 'city life' for almost 3 years. That same apartment started this whole Airbnb thing: since I listed it friends and family have approached me to list their apartments, homes, cottages and beach houses for them; and now I manage almost a dozen listings on Airbnb, and have created jobs and opportunities for others. The past couple of years I live in a really small house in Tamboerskloof with my girlfriend, two daughters and two cats - although the ginger one is almost always MIA. The cat, not the kid, that is.
