Verano (Summer) is a tiled oasis in a fully equipped, screened-in ecological home. A liquid flow of space opens onto grass comfortable for your feet, swaying trees and bushes, flowering plants and fruit trees. A walkway leads to the beach.
Verano is a place where there’s no need for heating or air-conditioning. This apartment is simplicity, transparency and beauty, with built-in furniture and ocean-inspired décor. Eloquently clear of clutter, Verano’s various hues of sand pink and white tile offer a clean, breezy look next to the sea. The best of barefoot living with all the amenities.
Guests get their own personal key for the front door, as well as smaller keys for the locked storage areas within the apartment. All guests at Casa Tambien have full access to the beach and lovingly maintained walking trails at Playa Escondida, as well as to its beachfront restaurant and bar.
Interaction with guests
Except when we’re at our house in Ecuador (1-2 months most years), our contact with guests is via email or phone. Playa Escondida’s owner is Canadian, and other English-speaking workers can provide laundry services, and assist with other questions and needs.
Other things to note
While the listing is for ONE bedroom and THREE beds, note that the exceptionally comfortable Queen bed is in a private bedroom. The other two single beds, each one by two meters, thus quite a bit bigger than standard single beds, and made of thick foam, are in the living room or living area.
We, the owners, designed everything in the house: the tiled and hardwood floors, the eleven-foot ceilings, the wide eaves that bring in the morning sun and sunsets, while protecting guests from the midday sun. Linens, kitchen items, wooden counters, etc. have also been selected by us.
We built the house over a number of years, finishing it in 2013. When we first came to the Ecuadorean coast, we expected a cold Pacific Ocean, high heat and lots of mosquitoes. We found none of these. The Humboldt Current keeps the Pacific warm here, 365 days a year. The ocean breezes keep the air temperature between 60 and 85 (occasionally hotter), and nine months a year, in the dry season, you can’t find a mosquito, and even during the “rainy season,” it usually rains only in the afternoon, so the “skeeters” are at a minimum. Still, we’ve got mosquito nets for all beds, and have screened in the entire living areas on all three floors.
That said, we spend most of our time, when in the house, on the expansive shaded decks that surround the living areas. The eleven-foot ceilings provide unbelievable views of the Pacific, the cliffs along the coast, the other thatched roof homes and “pallapas” in the reserve, and the beautiful tropical flora and fauna that surround you.
When you leave the house:
Saunter down to the sea for some body-surfing in water that heals your body.
Enjoy fish, lobster, shrimp or ceviches that were in the ocean just a day or two ago.
Take a walk down the coast through openings made in the rock over thousands of years. Explore for shells, draw a picture, “harvest” some driftwood, sit on a rock.
Read a book. Or three. Or ten.
Paint a picture, on the beach, or on your deck.
Put your feet up on one of the ten hammocks throughout the house. Take a nap.
Do some yoga. Meditate. And think about coming here next time with your entire yoga or meditation group. While there are beds for twelve people in Casa Tambien, if others brought sleeping bags, the house could accommodate many, many more. The screened-in living area comprised only about one-third of the square footage, while the decks comprise two-thirds of the floor space.
Please treat our home as if it were yours, paying particular attention to cleanliness and safety by always locking up when going out.

We are artists, builders and peace educators, both with an eye for fun and adventure. We came to Playa Escondida “by chance” in 2005, and within months had purchased land and begun building Tambien, a dream house in a dream country. Based in North Carolina in the U.S., we love nature, travel, writing and painting, yoga and new experiences with family and friends, old and new. Since we're not usually at our house in Ecuador, we encourage guests to "front load" your questions for us, and to inquire about our Spanish- and English-speaking "help on the ground" at Casa Tambien. We want to be responsive hosts, wherever we are, to make your stay the best it can possibly be.
