The space

Gîte Wistéria’s position in town is very unique – a 5 minute walk to Mazamet’s amenities and yet 5 minutes walk away from wonderful walks in the Montagne Noire National Park. The gîte is a two bed-roomed 19th century cottage that sleeps 4 people. The bedrooms are next to each other, so you walk through the twin bedroom to get to the double bedroom, or use the French doors onto the garden (perfect for summer nights). The gîte has one large shower room, a comfortable living room and a separate, well equipped kitchen. All rooms are south facing and have shuttered, double French doors leading onto a well maintained garden with lockable street access. It is awarded 2 Stars by the local Tourist Office.

Guest access

Our guests have private access to the whole gite and gite garden. It is not shared with anyone. They also have a lockable gate entrance from the street into the private gite garden. Although the gite is built on one level, there are 9 steps up to the street level from the garden with a hand-rail.
Parking for cars, motorbikes or trail bike trailers is on the street or in nearby public car parks. You can bring your bicycles into the garden, but don't forget we have 9 steps from the garden to the street!

Interaction with guests

The gite is adjacent to our home, so if you have any queries during your stay, we're around most of the time, so just give us a call!
We like to welcome you when you arrive and if you like, we can have a chat over a drink or cup of tea to discuss all the exciting places you can visit on your holiday.
While we wish to share our knowledge of this area, we also respect your privacy. So if you do have any questions during your stay, or if you encounter a problem in the gite, please do let us know as soon as possible.
There will be someone available to hand back keys to etc when you leave.

Other things to note

Gîte Wistéria is very close to many cultural and historic centres which are featured on our website. If you are interested in medieval history, then this is your country – we are surrounded by castles, fine cathedrals and medieval towns and villages. The major cultural centres of Toulouse, Carcassonne, Albi, Castres and Beziers are all within about an hour’s drive from the gite making exploring the area very easy. Come and discover this relatively unknown corner of France!

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely Gite with beautiful little garden. So lovely to be able to open the doors onto the garden in every room. Everything was ideal and Felicity was a very helpful host. Felicity gave us wonderful recommendations for things to do each day of our stay and they all suited us perfectly.

We had a wonderful time at this delightful cottage. Bakery and butcher are a minutes walk away. The cottage is very well appointed and comfortable. The garden too is very charming and perfect. The lake is only a 5 min drive away and brilliant for kids and adults alike. Sadly the weather wasn't favourable for most of our stay. Nonetheless we had a lovely restful stay. The Saturday morning market was great for seeing the town come alive and stocking up on delicious food. We had hoped to eat out every night however there weren't very many restaurants in the town. All in all a lovely stay.

Response from Felicity:
Thank you Gail for your kind feedback – we’re so pleased you had a good trip and were comfortable in the gite with your children. I wish I’d known you wanted to eat out each night, as there are at least 11 restaurants in town that I know of and more within a 15 minute drive. Thanks for alerting me of this issue, and I will leave a more comprehensive list of places in the gite for future guests.

All the other reviewers have said everything there is to say about this lovely gite which has a very well thought out interior design to give a real feeling of France. However, what does not come across is how well thought out the lovely little garden has been designed to ensure that there is just the right level of shade and light. The plants, bushes and trees are wonderful in terms of inviting bees etc into the garden and hearing the scampering of little lizards across the stone chipping pathway is great entertainment. Not only is the gite wonderful, Felicity is a star. She was helpful giving us advice after our booking and went out of her way to organise a reservation at a restaurant on our arrival evening following discussions as to what we wanted. Once there, she was the font of all knowledge (particularly about which lakes to visit) without being intrusive. All I can say is thank you Felicity for sharing your gite!

Me and my friend had a wonderful stay in the Gite. Felicity welcomed us with a box filled with delicious bread, home-made jam, wine etc.. It was a great start for a wonderful time in Mazamet. The Gite was perfectly clean and well- equipped so that we could prepare our own meals every now and then. Felicity provided us with some hiking maps and was easy to reach - in person or via mobile. I can highly recommend the Gite!

We chose the Gite Wisteria because the pictures of the interior and the garden looked so charming. We were seeking a quiet place, centrally located so we could walk to all shops, cafes and the marche. My husband dreams of retiring to Mazamet and we wanted to look all around. This location turned out to be both charming and practical. Meeting Felicity to receive the key and her welcome turned out to be exceptionally simple as her instructions were clear and her front door is right around the corner from the gite entrance. The interior was immaculate. It would be impossible to leave the gite as we found it as Felicity's housekeeping was superlative. Everything gleamed. She also presented us with a basket of goodies including butter, biscuits, and home made marmalade. Her first language is English but we were able to communicate in both English and French. The gite offers dishes for cooking as well as some kitchen supplies, including lovely plates, wine glasses, and picnic supplies. The master bedroom was very comfortable. Each of the rooms opens into the central, walled courtyard filled with lovely garden plantings. There are shutters to close at night so you can sleep in without the sunlight entering. Altogether charming. It is an easy walk to the community recycling drop off as well as to the Tuesday/Saturday market, many banks, shops, cafes, and two churches. There is a laundromat a few blocks away but definitely recommend using the washing machine provided by Felicity in the spacious bathroom and air drying on a rack, also provided. The machines public smelled of cigarette smoke. We carried the drying rack into the lovely garden and the breeze finished the work for us. All in all, we loved our stay and would definitely book the Gite Wisteria again. Thanks, Felicity!

I live with my partner Martin Capey here in Mazamet where we both have art studios. Apart from our own practice, we love living here for the amazing walks in the mountains, swimming in the various lakes and, due to the clement weather - a bit of gardening! This region, as indeed all of France, is amazing for it's local food produce that we certainly like a lot!
We enjoy being hosts as we can then share some of this amazing place with our guests. We live adjacent to the gite, and although we are keen to see our guests settled in OK, our style is fairly low key during their stay! We just want people to have a great time!
