Spend some time in this nice, clean family home, right on top of the marine action that Mirissa is known for.

Price is for the big triple room with hot water. Double rooms are available as well.

The space

Samatha’s is newly built and has four bedrooms, each with attached bathroom, nice little balconies and a common dining area on the veranda. Simple, clean, convenient. Samantha and his family live in a separate part of the house, where he’s even built himself a little Ayurvedic centre.

Interaction with guests

Being a fisherman himself, Samantha mostly fishes for what they call ‘colour fish’ to export. Fishing being a notoriously hard job, he wants his two sons to stick to tourism, a job for which they are well suited, because their English is better than dad’s. “I can’t do anything special” Samatha said when we visited him, but he’s dead wrong. This man spent his life off shore, knows everything about the fish and is happy to share his love of the sea with his guest. Seriously, this is your opportunity to go fishing or snorkelling with a man who knows his trade.

As is usual in Sri Lanka, food and drinks can be arranged upon request.

Many thanks to Vimal for a most pleasant and entertaining stay, we felt very much at home. Lenin and Albert likewise were most attentive to our needs. We certainly intend returning, as we have been absolutely charmed by Sri Lanka ,and the house is comfortable , with large rooms and an enjoyable garden. Donovan & Irina

Nice place, very close to the beach. Very welcoming host who made us lovely tea, and of course booked a whale trip for us. Had to pay extra for aircon, BEWARE! No breakfast provided before whale trip (6.30am), only during. Not the cleanest of places. But overall positive experience!

We had a lovely stay at Samantha's place, aka Sun Rest (worth looking for the painted sign on the wall). We were welcomed with cold drinks and friendly smiles from the whole family. It's a perfect location for exploring Mirissa, just a few minutes walk to the beach and bars with lots of places to choose where to eat. They were really helpful in arranging whale watching and tuktuks and would always stop and say hello. Good Sri Lankan breakfast, well priced and delicious.

Although he was smiling when he greeted me upon arrival, Mr. Samantha's lack of English left me feeling a bit abandoned upon arrival - e.g. he was unable to explain that the room's air conditioning costs 500 LKR extra per day. His wife Jewah was extremely friendly and helpful, although her English is also quite limited. I think that the price of the room should be a bit lower because there is an open sewer that runs in front of the entrance and garbage is put at that entrance as well. I think the smells from these make the place worth a bit less. Hot water never really worked either. Otherwise, I would describe this as a decent family home stay in that although the the guest rooms are self-contained, I found that I was often interacting with the family on the ground floor terrace of their home.

Our stay at Samantha's was wonderful. We were welcomed with the host family's smiley faces and the two nights went by really fast without any problems! We ate the really low-price breakfast which was as delicious as anywhere else and rented a scooter also from the family. The Mirissa beach is literally few steps away when you take a shortcut through a hotel/restaurant to the beach :) We would recommend the place to anybody who likes to have a calm and safe surrounding!

Great Location just behind the beach Front. Rooms are spacious and from the terrace you can see Monkeys, a waran or bats passing by. The hosts are very friendly and warm People. We loved staying there, especially our kids who had the best time with Samantha's younger son.

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
