Great location

Situated beside a dramatic cascade on Moffit’s Brook, Brookside Cabin is an intimate retreat from the hustle and bustle. Brightened with skylights, windows, and glass doors, the cabin is a refuge to reconnect with nature, while being close to amenities. Hand-built in the mid-century by grandson of the “Bakelite” scientist, Leo Baekeland, this media-free, pet-free, shoe-free space sits in a lovely valley in a very special town.

The space
Enter the cabin, via the back door keypad, into a large living space-a combined living, dining, and cooking area. This room features 12-foot peaked ceilings, accentuated by four over-sized skylights, and an assuming stone fireplace to keep warm on chilly nights. The fully-equipped kitchen features Bertazzoni professional appliances. Ascend a few stairs to two, well-appointed, bedrooms with hotel class Queen beds and a modern bathroom featuring a spacious walk-in rain shower and lovely skylight. The front bedroom, a bit larger and brighter, has a nice closet, while the back bedroom is cozier, offering sights and sounds of the brook. Bedrooms are individually heated and cooled via a wall-mounted HVAC (remote control in each room), while the main living area has concealed climate control via a wall-mounted touch digital thermostat. Our cabin (once a mill site) is perched on a small cliff, alongside a meandering brook. Sitting back, off of a casually traveled country road, neighboring houses are just visible from the cabin. (Redding properties are zoned upwards of 2 acres.)
Our second home, the cabin’s meant for adult guests, respectful of the rugged natural exterior and mindful of the interior. Outdoor stone patios are a relaxing place to lounge, enjoy a glass of wine, and listen to nature.

Location

Redding, Connecticut, United States

Redding, CT (the Vermont of Connecticut) redefines a rural small town. Since the late 1930’s, residents have secured environmental protections against modernization, ensuring generational enjoyment of its natural wonders, including gorgeous state parks (one up the block), whimsical hiking trails, the awe-inspiring Saugatuck Reservoir (2 blocks away) and Redding’s enchanting historical sites, such as Stormfield (down the street), former residence of Mark Twain, the “Father of American Literature.” Just next door, in fact, is perched Insitu, an 8-acre award-winning sculpture garden and conservancy. Visitors wishing to partake in local wandering that may include entry are advised to check online resources for accessibility and hours.

I'm a Special Education teacher and artist, living with my awesome partner, Rudy, in Brooklyn. I love visiting new places and the stories these travels impart. This is our home away from home and has allowed us to continue a burgeoning interest in renovation and design.
