A charming, rambling house overlooking Kampala, Makindye Hill House offers affordable rooms to let in a green and pleasant compound with plenty of birdlife. Convenient for Kampala, but far from the city bustle, it's perfect for nature-lovers.

The space

Makindye Hill House offers the perfect escape from the city, near the city. Close enough to Kampala to be convenient yet you can fall asleep to the sound of the owls hooting, and wake up to the plaintive calling of one of our resident pair of sparrow hawks.

The room for this listing is a twin room sleeping 2 people. Matching single beds, with traditional Kitenge (African print) covers and square bed nets suspended from Mavule frames make for a comfortable night's sleep. Two corner wardrobe units offer a reasonable amount of hanging space, and a vast hardwood cabinet and chest of drawers also provide plenty of storage.

The room is adjacent to one of the two shared bathrooms in the house - but as its on a separate floor from all the other rooms it feels more like a bathroom for your own personal use. Those staying in rooms on the first floor tend to use the first floor bathroom.

We have other rooms of various sizes within the house, so rather than be put off by the calendar, it's best to get in touch and check with me direct.

Guest access

We have a large kitchen, spacious and comfortable living room and most importantly, some great outdoor space: a vast dining table lines the terrace and a wooden deck, its roof lined in papyrus, extends into the garden area to offer relaxed seating around a dark wooden coffee table.

Parking is ample for those that have cars, and we have a list of friendly Boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers and special hires (car taxi drivers) that know the property for those that haven't.

The gardens include a vegetable patch, which Moses tends. If you would like to buy some herbs, salads or vegetables from him for a great price, just let him know.

He takes care of the compound and rubbish, and is on hand to open the gate for you whenever you are leaving or entering the property. Lucy is our housekeeper, and she will clean and do laundry on a daily basis for you - all included in the rent.

There is an Internet router which does not come with any data loaded - but if guests would like to buy some data to use for themselves they are welcome to. It saves investing in an expensive dongle or wifi router if you are only in Kampala a short while.

Interaction with guests

Myself and my partner live on site, in a small apartment separate from the main house. One of us is normally around most days, but we will stay out of your way, unless you have any questions or problems.

Other things to note

We have three friendly dogs and one cat on site. They are not allowed inside the main house - but those with allergies should perhaps consider an alternative place to stay.

Anne-Marie was very helpful when I made the booking - she even arranged a very decently priced airport pickup on short notice, and my arrival very early in the morning/night was no problem. The compound itself is well-maintained by the wonderful Lucy and Moses - the friendliest people you'll meet. The house is in a lush garden with lots of cool birds and three friendly dogs. My room was basic but good. The separate bathroom had no hot water when I was there and there was no internet - amenities I could certainly do without but which other travelers may prefer to have. Also it's good to know that the location on the Kizungu hill of Makindye is a little secluded: perfect if you love to wake up to the sound of birds rather than honking taxis, but if you don't have your own transport getting to the nearest boda/taxi stage is a 15-minute walk. All in all I highly recommend the place for its wonderful setting, lovely staff, and accommodating price.

Comfortable bed in a nice room. I actually had a single room not the twin. The established, rambling garden has a great view over the city. It was a peaceful place and other guest pleasant. Communication with the host was easy and helpful.

Anne was very responsive and helped me with tasks that wasn't really part of her Airbnb obligations. She send me very clear direction to her place. The people who works for her are very nice and supportive and the dogs are a plus, they are adorable. After the chaos of Kampala there is no best place to rest than her place and i would definitely stay here again.

Anne- Marie was very helpful, helped me recommending a driver to get to the house. Lucy and Moses are both very friendly and helpful, they can provide very good advice if it is your first time in Kampala. They are always around and you can refer to them whenever you need. The veranda is lovely and relaxing, the best part in the house!! The atmosphere in the house was great, relaxing and welcoming In terms of position it can be a little isolated, so it is a good choice if you like nature.

A very pleasant stay. A peaceful and relaxing place. Lucy and Moses were lovely and very helpful. Ismail, the recommended taxi service, was very good and Ismail himself rescued us when the driver he'd booked for us got stuck in traffic. plenty of room and everything you need.

Our stay was great at Anne-Marie's. Great to meet Lucy and her amazingly helpful driver Ishmael. Lucy is a fab cook and knows how to cook great matoke! Really lovely side of Kampala to stay on and easy to get into the centre. Highly recommended!
